DICE Talks About Frostbite 2 Technology for Battlefield 3 - News

DICE Producer Patrick Bach recently had a talk with CVG and he discussed Battlefield 3’s tech, Frostbite 2 and what it brings to the table.

Frostbite 2 was in development for more than three years and Bach says they needed the tech to create Battlefield 3. Frostbite 2 isn't the only new tech being used for Battlefield 3. Keen eyes watching the gameplay trailers have noticed character animations look different and move with momentum. DICE is now using technology developed by EA itself – called ANT, the same character animation tech used by the FIFA series.

Battlefield 3 will bring the destruction over from the Bad Company spin-offs, but Bach says Battlefield 3 will feature micro-destruction which will enable players to “chip away small pieces from cover, which will come into play throughout BF3.”

Bach then talked about the game’s scale. He stressed that everything in Battlefield 3 will be bigger “Bigger landscapes, bigger cities but also a sense of difference when going indoors - showing the cities from a very tight, narrow perspective.” Of course all this wouldn’t work if it wasn’t rendered properly, Bach knows this is important even going as far to say that rendering is “the wrapper that makes everything else look awesome.”

If you ever played a Battlefield game you know how important audio is. Bullets whiz by, gunshots crack the air, and explosions sound crisp. DICE has been winning quite a few awards with their audio work and Bach acknowledges it stating that “I would say we're already best in class, but in Battlefield 3 we're taking this a major step forward.”

Keep in mind that good technology does not mean it will automatically be a good game. It’s up to DICE’s developers to implement it. What good tech does is it immerses the player into the world the developers created and enriches the experience without compromising gameplay.

Generally I'm impressed with all these things, but especially the new level of destruction they're bringing to it. It's gonna be great if in multiplayer you could properly level buildings by, say, loading the entire ground floor with C4. Also, hope they have big levels in singleplayer.
