Call of Duty: Black Ops Sells 7 Million Copies on Day One - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 10 November 2010 / 61,604 Views

According to early VGChartz estimates, Call of Duty: Black Ops has become the fastest-selling game of all time with over 7 million units sold on day one following over 4.5 million preorders as reported earlier in the week. If the 7 million for Black Ops holds true, it would make the launch around 10% larger than Modern Warfare 2 and the biggest of all time.

Lending some extra weight to our estimations are reports that over 4 million users have now connected to Xbox Live to play Black Ops and similarly impressive figures via PSN. Breaking the data down, we estimate over 3.6 million units were sold in the USA, 1.4 million units in the UK, over a million units in continental Europe and 350,000 units in Canada. Xbox 360 takes the largest proportion of sales with 59%, 36% for PS3 and the remainder on PC, Wii and DS.

Stay tuned to VGChartz as we bring more Black Ops sales updates over the week.

For all the people talking about the best selling games of all time(not bundled with a system): Angry Birds has sold over 50 million, Wii play is at 27 million, Mario Kart Wii is at 26 million, Wii Sports Resort is at 26 million, Wii Fit is at 22 million, New Super Mario Brothers Wii is at 21 million, Nintendogs is at 23 million, New Super Mario Brothers DS is at 26 million.

Lots of those titles are bundled.
Angry Birds has been given away for free on Android so those numbers are misleading.

I honestly don't understand how those shooters games can sell so much.
Dammit.. Go play something else people!!!!

Bobby Kotick, sittin' in his throne is loling at you all that play shooters.
And the game is full of problems from what I have been reading.

Fatal Error 2.0 ! PS3's dying ! Gahahah.
Bobby Kotick is the man.... I have to recognize it.
I bet he is able to convince people to buy horse shit.

I hope this is true. CoD isn't even my cup of tea but by god I hope the Video Game industry has reached this level.

sephiroth4598 (on 15 November 2010)

@Ruiner78 I don't see your point. None of those games even halve the "sales" of Wii Sports. They also are not sold with all Wii consoles. If they were however they would all be tied for first.

  • 0
scat398 (on 15 November 2010)

now that we know the 3 million online was a bug, I wonder if we will see these numbers adjusted down.

  • 0
dirkd2323 (on 14 November 2010)

Wow we have some major winers here, if you dont like the game dont fucking play it, stop hating, its a good game , with good online, get over it , if they want to milk the franchise , who gives a shit, there are plenty of other great games to play, stop the bitching , my wife does not complain as much as you people.

  • 0
static360 (on 13 November 2010)

Somewhere bobby kotick is tugging the strings on the back of people that bought it because he got them by the balls. No wonder he wants to make it yearly, selling millions of copies of basically the same game with different title and new killstreak every year. Way to go gamers, way to support the publishers that are destroying a great franchise. I swear if i hear another gamer that bought the game bi*chand moan about how activision does business am gonna have to fight the urge to smack them in the back of the head. u complain about them yet u buy their games.

  • 0
yog-sothot (on 12 November 2010)

with such crazy numbers, it's no surprise that big publishers keep on milking the same fucking franchises year after year.

I can't wait for ActiBlizz to start charging for the multiplayer, maybe some people will start looking at other games... Problem is that other publishers would probably be stupid enough to start charging for online too and then complain when they don't make money, and finally lay off people...

Damn industry

This is getting plain sui*. Stop buying this stuff like its candy. Stop reporting about it as if it were the frikkin WW III. End of all days, the last news of modern age. All out media coverage. Nothing to loose, nothing to gain. The fools shall be set free.

No wonder politics and other "organizations" have such an easy timing doing the whole "gaming = shooting games= bad" PR-thing. Such news make it way to easy. Too easy to pass up on it in fact.

On a side note. At least nobody will keep ranting on after this that there is any correlation whatsoever between the quality of a game and it sales.
Which is real bummer btw :D

@WarmachineX - you wish, ever heard of Gran Turismo series or Wii / Mario titles? Not to mention sales on older Nintendo handheld consoles. Enjoy this little link: http://bit.ly/daL8hx

@sephiroth4598 - Were people also "forced" to buy Mario Kart Wii (23 million sales to date) Sports Resort (18 milion copies sold to date) or New Super Mario Bros Wii (16 milion copies sold to date)?

Most overrated launch of all time? I'd say so. The game isn't even being terribly well received compared to a lot of the other big hits from this year, or even previous Call of Duty titles... I guess a lot of people like their online multiplayer :P

  • 0
curl-6 (on 11 November 2010)

At least it outsold MW2, and rightfully so, as it's a vastly better game than that pretentious scum.

  • 0
sephiroth4598 (on 11 November 2010)

@ kinofwale I honestly don't understand why people put Wii sports in that list. You don't buy it by choice. If you want a Wii you are forced to buy Wii sports. I wouldn't mind a five dollar price drop in the Wii so that I could buy it without Wii sports.

@WarmachineX If they are, they are likely also on other platforms. For example Black Ops would have lost would have lost 41% were it exclusive to the Xbox. That would certainly remove it from it's position.

  • 0
regin2005 (on 11 November 2010)

And to think this would actually be GOOD news.

@poroporo
Thanks for stifling innovation in the industry by buying more FPS games.

But what you don't see is, due to competitions like this ( COD and Halo), other companies (EA, Ubisoft) that try to make a new FPS game are forced to innovate to out due the other . Any company/publisher/developer going against the two top dogs (COD or Halo) has to really think out the box/innovate to match or surpass what these to franchise had accomplished..

Coming from someone who absolutely hated MW2 and even practically gags at mentioning that disaster of a game.. I have to say that Black Ops has some impressive features.

My only complaint right now is the party system is screwed up - so hopefully a fix is in place.. and quickly.

  • 0

If a new COD sold this much less than 2 years after MW2.....
Expect loser Activision to rehash one every year

horray...another good but not greaat game selling as if it was the best game of all time...woot...?

I loves me some call of duty, but what's the big deal? when's the last time a truly exceptional FPS game was released? Halo, Call of Duty, MEdal of Honor, Gears of War...all pretty unoriginal games with a lot of advertising dollars and polish, that's it.

  • 0
Kantor (on 10 November 2010)

@Goddbless: PC, Wii and DS sales combined only accounted for 5% of the sales. MW2 was available on PC at launch.

  • 0
crissindahouse (on 10 November 2010)

@kowenicki

"1.4m in the UK!! thats insane. 60m population"

yeah but europeans from all countries buy there games over the interent in uk shops because in uk, the games cost much less than in other countries. for example, i allways buy my games in the uk living in germany. i have to pay between 55-70€ in germany for xbox games and just 30-50€ for the same games in the uk. and in germany, they censored black ops and thats why many germans buy the uncensored uk version over play.com, thehut.com and so on...

binary solo (on 10 November 2010)

What goes up must come down. Amazing for CoD to break it's own record, and with the "2nd tier" game game no less. But I think the CoD series will drop back to the pack and subsequent games sell closer to other popular FPS games, albeit probably still be the highest selling FPS in any given year (and probably the highest selling game).

Dunno why people are willing this game to do PS3-like numbers on the Wii. I'd have thought people would want Goldeneye to do PS3-like CoD numbers. Getting to a 3-4 million on Wii is enough to secure simultaneous future releases and as a demonstration that 3rd party "hard core" titles can sell multiple millions. 360 and PS3 will have legs. WaW had good legs on the HD systems, so will this. I don't see Wii version out-legging PS3 in any substantial way.

  • 0
Phobos (on 10 November 2010)

What is CoD? Something to eat?

  • 0
Cobretti2 (on 10 November 2010)

Those who think Wii version will sell as much as PS3 are dreaming. Did anyone look on torrent sites just too see how many people are pirating it already lol.

I also noticed 360 version being downloaded a fair bit. Can this even be played online? or they got measures against pirated games? Overwise that 4million online estimate may not be a true estimate of sales.

  • 0
Chairman-Mao (on 10 November 2010)

wowwww thats crazy! I never thought it would do that well. I have to think this will be the peak for the CoD series, no way people buy this many copies of MW3 with how bad MW2 was.

  • 0
Metallicube (on 10 November 2010)

oniyide: I think the vast majority of people know the Wii version won't even get near outselling the PS3 version. Although I do think the Wi version will have better legs than the others in the long run, bringing it closer to the PS3 version than most people think

  • 0
oniyide (on 10 November 2010)

@pezus im not making up crap, if you go the the Ninty power BO Wii review thread someone on their said that Wii sales should match PS3 since its not gimped. Im not saying even most people think this, but im still shocked that after all this time someone would think COD on Wii would match the HDs

  • 0
MonstaMack (on 10 November 2010)

@pesuz they were few and far between. However, there were quite a lot of people who thought Black Ops would not match MW2's launch sales and they look to be wrong. However I can't say for sure that Black Ops will match MW2's sales in the long run, as I still think Modern Warfare as a name has higher potential to sell more copies. One thing I can gurantee is MW3 will outsell Black Ops ;)

@GianCarmen it doesnt look good, if the HDs make up for 95% of that 7mil (59+36=95) and Wii is sharing the remaining 5% with the PC version and DS. I wonder what some people were thinking when they thought the Wii version could match the PS3, I cant wait for the excuses
