Titanfall 2 Is Not Native 4K on PS4 Pro, Has More Stable Frame Rate and Resolution - News

Titanfall 2 will not support native 4K resolution on the PlayStation 4 Pro, however, the game will see some improvements on the upgraded console.

 "It’s not native 4K and I would be surprised if anyone saw native 4K with AAA level games any time soon," Respawn Executive Producer Drew McCoy told Stevivor. "It just takes so much processing power. It’s unbelievable amounts of just GPU grunt to do that."


Respawn has been able to improve the resolution and make the frame rate more stable.

"It’s a PS4 that’s faster," added McCoy. "We’re able to increase the resolution, we have high-res shadows, and maybe higher particle counts. The frame rate is more stable; we have dynamic resolution scaling on all consoles, but it scales down less often on PS4 Pro to maintain 60 frames-per-second.

"We did not get much of a heads up, like most people. So we didn’t get a tonne of time. Like no one even knew about it until….I don’t even know, but it was late. Since it’s just the PS4, but faster, it’s really not that hard to say 'when running on PS4 do this, and when running on PS4 Pro do that.'

"Because we also made the PC version, we have some nobs we can tweak, so we just spent some time making sure it still runs well and looks good on PS4 Pro. You know, making sure it doesn’t look any worse at all. That’s the requirement: it can’t run any worse or look worse than on PS4. So it runs better, looks better and has no bugs on PS4 Pro.

"We definitely wanted it to be [on PS4 Pro]. When you’re making a AAA game, you want to be seen as a AAA game, and what kind of big budget game is not going to be seen on PS4 Pro? You really want to be up there. So when Sony did the unveiling, we just weren’t ready to have something to show yet. I was on phone calls with them, but the schedules didn’t line up."

Titanfall 2 launches for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC on October 28.

I thought they weren't allowed to improve the frame rates on the Pro for online games? Because it gives an advantage. How are they allowed do this?

come on, the advantage is slim, the reaction time is what does the difference and the internet connection is way more important than framerate. if you shoot a guy, your console might not display it on the screen as fast but the connection to the server will arrive first and the shoot will count, the dead guy can see it on screen as fast as the 60 fps can deliver but the server is where the decision of, who kills and who is dead, is made.

They can make the frame rate more stable at 60 fps with pro. The developers can't make a game 30 fps for PS4 and 60 fps for PS4Pro.

A game can have a slightly better fps on the Pro as the as the target FPS is the same for the PS4 and PS4Pro but the Pro does a better job staying at 60 fps.

This isn't surprising. The PS4 Pro just can't handle 4k on these sorts of high frame rate AAA games. Neither can the Xbox S.

Of course the Xbox One S wouldn't handle 4K. It's not stronger than a vanilla PS4....let alone the PS4 Pro. Scorpio will be stronger though. However, I don't see it being native 4K for that console either.

It is my understanding that PS4 Pro is not going to be powerful enough for native 4K at even 30fps in most instances; except for undemanding indie stuff. Even Scorpio may have a job, although I expect a lot more playable at 4K 30fps on that compared to PS4 Pro. PS4 Pro just isn't the 4K Machine they are attempting to market it as, and I think the average hardcore gamer will realise that. Its hardened Sony fans that will buy this for the most part.

You might never see it in AAA games (on PS4K), its just that hard to push 4X the resolution on 2X the GPU power. You're already seeing some indie titles run at 4k native on PS4K but I wouldn't hold much hope for AAA's to make the graphical cutbacks needed just to run at 4K.

While there is some truth to that, not every AAA game is as graphics-intensive as others. Sports games, for example, seem less taxing, so both NBA 2k17 and the new PES have been announced at native 4k, and I would certainly consider them to be AAA games. I've actually been pleasantly surprised by the number of 4k native games announced so far.
