SEGA Aiming to Regain Fan Trust

SEGA Aiming to Regain Fan Trust - News

by Craig S , posted on 07 July 2015 / 3,899 Views

In an interview with Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, SEGA's CEO and President, Hajime Satomi, has admitted that the company has let the ball drop a few too many times over the last decade and is now looking to turn things around and regain fan trust:

"We did our best to build a relationship of mutual trust with older fans of Sega, but looking back, there’ve been some titles that have partially betrayed that [trust] in the past 10 years.

Sega in the ‘90s was known for its ‘brand, but after that, we’ve lost trust, and we were left with nothing but ‘reputation. For this reason, we’d like to win back the customers’ trust, and become a ‘brand,’ once again."

Satomi also noted that the company has learnt a lot following its acquisition of Atlus, saying "
As far as the Western market goes, we learned a lot from Atlus. If we can make a title with proper quality, I believe there’s a good chance for it to do well even in the West for players that like to play Japanese games."

If you want to regain fan trust, stop releasing Sonic Boom games.

I disagree. Fire and Ice actually looks similar to how Sonic Colors was. It looks like fun.

There wouldn't be much problem with those if they were good, and Fire and Ice looks decent.

It could be the best Sonic game in a decade and it wouldn't restore fan trust because it's under a moniker that's absolutely hated.

Then give us sequels we actually want. Streets of Rage 4, Altered Beast 2 and Golden Axe 4 and Sonic 5 would be a good start....

The first step to not piss off fans is to not make a sequel to what some consider the worst Sonic game of all-time..

So, show us Virtua fighter 6.
And valkyria chronicles 4.

If you've really learned from Atlus, bring back games like Valkyria Chronicles and Sakura Wars, and have Atlus localize them.

What I don't get about the Sonic series is they have a partnership here in the west with Archie Comics and one of their longest running continuous titles that's actually moving books each month.

If they want to build a world and have games that explore more than just Sonic running fast, I'm kinda boggled they haven't tapped the Archie world and cast.

So that's why you released one Sonic game on mobile and then announced a sequel to the meh-at-best Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal? I think people would rather have Lost World 2.

To be clear, I am not calling Lost World particularly good, I'm saying Boom is that bad :P

Then bring back games that came out Genesis days, like Street of Rage, Golden Axe, Shinobi.. etc. On PS4/XboxOne/Wii U of course.

First I'll say that I'll believe it when I see it. Secondly, the fact that he mentions branding surprises me and gives me some hope. Sega hasn't been a real brand in a long time. It seems like for the last decade, they haven't been concerned about branding. The problem is older people like me remember Sega and how great they used to be. But now you have kids who are 15-20 years old who don't see Sega as a brand. They see Sega as that company who makes the crappy Sonic games. Take the recent Sega racing games as examples. Those games are made to appeal to kids but how are kids supposed to identify with characters and and references to games that they know nothing about?

So yes, I know a lot of us are demanding a sequel to Panzer Dragoon, Jet Set Radio, Phantasy Star, Streets of Rage and other classic games, but more importantly, Sega needs to repair their brand. They need to reach beyond those of us who are in our late 20's and early to mid 30's. They need to be a powerful brand that can reach out to a new generation.

How are they going to earn trust back when they're only releasing mobile games from here on out?

So, does that mean they are finally bringing a Valkyria Chronicles new game?

Based off of your business practices over the past few years, it's gonna take a lot to re establish my trust with you sega

Good! Hints: Ditch Sonic boom, make Sonic Adventure 3 and continue that series (maybe a side story with the sonic heroes sun-franchise), make skies of arcadia 2, bring budget console ports of Daytona USA 2 and Scud Racer, launch an HD collection of Shenmue 1 and 2, localise PSO2 and PSNova. Theres a start for you. Go at it!

I'll trust Sega when they stop making meh-to-terrible games that just the most desperate of fans would call "great".

Step 1. Honorably commit seppuku before us. Most of us will probably accept nothing less.
Step 2. Go back in time and agree to fund Bayonetta 2 so that we all get to play it.
Or if that's too tall an order, give us Bayonetta 3.
