Sony Opens New VR-Centric 1st Party Developer

Sony Opens New VR-Centric 1st Party Developer - News

by Craig S , posted on 15 May 2015 / 4,528 Views

A job listing for a Graphics Engine Programmer has revealed that Sony has opened a virtual reality focussed first party development studio, called North West Studio, based (as the name implies) in the North West of England.

The listing, which was spotted by All Games Beta, describes the job as offering "an exciting and rare opportunity to join an ambitious new studio to create original games exclusively for Project Morpheus, PlayStation's VR platform".

Expect to hear a lot more about Sony's plans for virtual reality at E3 next month.

Look at Sony drop this as fast as they dropped the move. Who in their right mind is going to put that in their heads for hours?

Have you not tried VR yet somewhere, it's pretty cool...

I thought the move is integrated with Project Morpheus.

Sony are dropping a lot of confidence into VR, and smartly so. The jump from PS3->PS4 isn't that great, not because of power, but because games have reached their level of visual flair on solid tv screens. You can't make games any more 3d than they are now.
Yes you can always make graphics better on every new uncharted, but gamers will start to get bored and look for the next generational leap, and VR sort of emulates a 4D experience, in some way excels it.
I think VR will be big, primarily evidenced by how the big hitters are backing it. Sony, valve and Facebook. If it does pick up, I reckon microsoft will partner with oculus to use vr on xbox one alternatively.

4D?! That is ludicrous, its impossible for us to see 4D.
I totally disagree. This screen in your face does nothing but kill your eyesight. This is not VR, its you looking at the TV real close on 2 screens. Nothing about is cool or revolutionary. Its just the next fad like the kinect/move.
Its going to be a colossal waste of resources that could be used to make good games.

Over 20 million PS4 owners would disagree with you. PS4 is selling faster than PS2. People don't understand how long it takes to make a game. You want everything right away and then complain when it's broken.

I wasnt talking about sales @Maximum, but thanks for making yourself look like a fool who doesn't read past an opening statement.

@Nem, "emulates a 4D experience" in the sense where 3d is a solid picture you look at and 4d is around you, thats why i was careful with my choice of words.
Also, a computer, a tv kills your eyesight just as much as a miniscule screen...
But i've tried Oculus, and it is revolutionary as hell. I'm sure Sony, valve and facebook see something in it that you don't sonny.

Sonny, there are alot of things companies dont see. Otherwise every product would be a sucess.
This thing isnt practical. As i commented, think about the strain in your neck when having the thing on your head for hours. What it will do to your sense of direction in the real world when you come back.
Things in paper and short demo's are one thing, but the technology has to be absolutely revolutionary for people to overlook the disconfort it will bring (not to mention the price). With that huge thing, its not gonna work commercially. It will be a fad, even if they push it madly like Microsoft did the Kinect. Eventually it will sink in.

Wow Nem, you really want this to be a painful product. Well I suppose if you keep telling yourself it is going to be uncomfortable you will start to believe it.

I'm willing to bet half the people on vghcartz has some form of mild arthritis or backache from the way they sit or bad posture while gaming, doesn't mean we stop.

Suppose footballers should quit sports when they get fouled and hurt their knee too?

After trying the Google cardboard with some simple Android games, my desire for a professional VR device has just increased. It will be the first time I spend more than $200 in a pheripheral.

PS4 is starting to lose terrain for the xbo in america, please do something about it :(

  • -2

It lost by 7% being $50 more expensive with no game releases, they're fine.

That is just 1 month, even three consecutive months still shouldn't be a problem. This is especially before E3.
