3DS Sales Top 15 Million Units in the US - News

Nintendo's eighth generation handheld, the 3DS, has hit a new milestone in the US. The handheld has surpassed the 15 million mark in the region, according to VGChartz's latest sales data.

The 3DS hit the milestone for the week ending March 28, where it sold 44,377 units to bring its lifetime sales in the US to 15,028,976 units. There have also been 56,616,244 games sold for the Wii U at retail in the US.

Looking at the software sales for the 3DS in the US, 11 games have sold more than one million units at retail. Super Mario 3D Land is the bestselling 3DS game in the US with sales of 4.22 million units. Pokemon X/Y has sold 4.08 million units, Mario Kart 7 has sold 3.81 million units, and New Super Mario Bros. 2 has sold 3.04 million units.

Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire has sold 2.86 million units and Super Smash Bros. has sold 2.33 million units. Other top selling games include The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D with sales of 1.61 million units, Animal Crossing: New Leaf with 1.48 million units, and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon with 1.44 million units.

The original 3DS launched in the US on March 27, 2011 and the 3DS XL launched on August 19, 2012. The updated New Nintendo 3DS XL launched earlier this year on February 13.

20,000,000 to 22,000,000 lifetime imo... around 21,000,000.

Not bad actually.... it could tail it out to 18-20 million LT, depending how soon the NX will arrive. If they can manage to push 80 million games at retailers, then they have a strong system on their hands :-)

15 million in 4 years ain't bad, averaging 3.75 million per year. Definitely not DS level, but solid in its own right.
