Crytek has no Interest in Continuing Darksiders Franchise - News

Almost all of THQ's properties and development studios were sold off to various publishers after THQ closed down last month. However, Vigil Games, the studio behind the Darksiders franchise, was unable to find a buyer, and the developer was shut down.

After many of Vigil's former staff was picked up by Crytek, many assumed that the team would be continuing the franchise with Darksiders III. Unfortunately, this does not seem to be the case, as Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli has confirmed that there will be no Darksiders at Crytek.

"We had chosen Austin as the destination for [our U.S. branch], and we needed a lean and core team of experts to run the studio. At the same time, we didn’t want to continue with Darksiders III, since that doesn’t fit with our strategy," said Yerli in an interview with VentureBeat

"So when I heard that [THQ laid off everyone at Vigil], I decided on Saturday morning to fly out to meet with them to see if the team would be interested to join our mission, which is significantly different than what this team has done before."

Former members of Vigil are now part of Crytek USA, and are reportedly working on an unannounced project. Meanwhile, Crytek UK (formerly Free Radical Design) is working on the sequel to another former THQ property, Homefront.

This raises the question: Who, if anyone, will make a new Darksiders game? At this point, I'm not even sure who owns the IP now. Platinum Games recently expressed an interest in making Darksiders III. Personally, I think they're the best bet - their experience with action games and Zelda-clones (Platinum is made up of many members of Okami-developer Clover Studios) makes them seem like a perfect fit for Darksiders specific niche.
