Super Smash Bros. for Wii U Highest Rated Game of 2014, Only 3 Original Games Rated 90+ - News

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is the highest rated new game on Metacritic in 2014 with a score of 92. It is just one of three original games with a score of 90 or higher. The other games with a 90 or higher rating were remakes or re-releases.

"It appears that gaming's transition year has turned into transition years," said Metacritic Features Editor  Jason Dietz. "The first full calendar year for next-generation consoles PS4 and Xbox One failed to spur the release of more than a handful of great games—and most of those high-scoring releases were merely re-releases of older titles for the new platforms."

"For the second straight year, just 11 console games (representing 9 unique titles) scored 90 or higher. Of those, only three were new games rather than ports of previously released titles. Overall, there were just 14 90+ releases in 2014 (see list at the bottom of this page), the lowest such total since 2006."

The Xbox One had the highest average metascore at 72.4, followed by the PlayStation 4 at 72.0. The Wii U had an average score of 66.8 and the PC 70.4. Two of the last generation consoles, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 had scores of 68.0 and 66.7, respectively. The 3DS had an average score of 67.3 and the PlayStation Vita 70.1.

I am surprised Dark Souls 2 is rated so highly. It felt like shit compared to Dark Souls 1.

Well, it's like anything Bethesda does (just as an example). Just because of the name everyone hypes it off the ass (ESO for instance). That T also hurt DS II.

Really? I thought Bayonetta 2 was better than Smash, which feels like an HD Brawl at times. Not saying it's a bad thing, but I didn't think Smash U was THAT good mmmh.

Between Bayonetta 2 and Smash, I would give it to Bayonetta. But is a tough choice, especially because of the Smash multiplayer.

That title is missing an important word (new).

These remasters shouldn't be counted as a new game. It's the same thing with better graphics. Ooo GTA has 1st person and cats oooo! Worst $60 i spent this year.

Have companies run out of ideas? Yes. Yes they have.

Nope, they didn't run out of ideas, publishers are not willing to take many chances on new ideas. They just want to milk the same franchise, because it is guaranteed to be profitable.

Is that average score only for this year? or since it released?

They should be one in the same... All of the games on that list released this year.
