Welcome to the VGChartz Gap charts. The charts will be updated monthly and each article will focus on a different gap chart. The charts include comparisons between the 7th generation and 8th generation, as well as comparing the 8th generation consoles.

3DS vs DS – VGCharts Gap Charts

3DS Vs. DS Global:

Gap change in latest month: 1,300,190 - DS

Gap change over last 12 months: 10,228,561 - DS

Total Lead: 10,432,572 – DS

3DS Total Sales: 33,309,280

DS Total Sales: 43,741,852

The 3DS remained behind the DS for the first nine months when you align the launches for the two handhelds. However, with the price cut along with several key titles the 3DS took a huge lead topping out at 6,428,655 units. Other than in one month the 3DS remained ahead of the DS from month nine to month 25. It was at this time that DS started flying off shelves.

An important note is that the two handhelds launched at different times of the year. The DS first launched in November 2004, while the 3DS launched in February. That would mean the DS has had one more holiday on the market and once the current holiday’s roll around the 3DS should make up a lot of the ground it has currently lost. The release of Pokemon X / Y and the 2DS will help boost sales considerably when they release on October 12.

But 3DS too have been down compared to last year performance in sells... but surely will have a huge come back with Pokemon and Mh4 in japan...

Nelda probably won't push too many consoles, but some. Pokemon and Monster Hunter (in Japan) are the real system sellers.

Took me a while to figure this out, but November 2006 is the 13th month point, not 12th because 1 month is 0 on this chart. i.e. November 2005 is counted as 1 month even though it was only half a month, same with 3DS in February 2011. Yea 3DS should start to catch up now, but it won't break even. DS still gained more ground after the holiday season last aligned year then during.

I think there's a typo. Total lead is 43,741,852 - 33,309,280 = 10,432,572
