Peter Moore: Digital to Overtake Retail in 2 or 3 Years - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 13 August 2012 / 4,831 Views

Electronic Arts COO Peter Moore spoke with Reuters about the growth in digital sales. EA is changing its focus from physical sales at retails, to the digital market. The publishers digital revenue increased to $1.3 billion for its previous fiscal year.

"There will come a point, whether it is two or three years from now, when we say. 'We are doing more in digital media now than we are in physical media,' and it's clearly ... not far away," said Moore. "This fiscal year we have 41 social mobile and free-to-play games on the slate, and later in the year we might make announcements about more games coming."

EA has also released its forecast for its current fiscal year which ends March 2013. The publisher expects revenue from the sale of physical games to be $2.6 billion, while digital revenue is expected to increase to $1.7 billion.

"Investors are starting to understand our strategy, are starting to see light at the end of tunnel, starting to see growth rates in the areas we have invested in and in the industry as a whole starting to attract attention again," said Moore.

Ea needs to give up Origin and put their full support into steam. I really can't think of any possible steam competitors.

So if you happen to get board and want to get a game to play on your phone, make sure it's not a EA game.

EA is making a big mistake! Retail is 100 times better!

i wonder if developers believe that in few years, when we will have 20x as much f2p games as we have now, that all will make still profit? i mean, i believe the success atm is because there is not much competition for "serious" f2p games, if they will have 20x as much competition the games won't make as much as they do atm because every single game will have less players than they have right now.

but that's just a theory, we will see when we get a huge f2p invasion anytime soon.

This does not say "digital sales will over take physical sales". There is a big difference.

Always the same... I hear this years ago. Fuck you EA.

You only come here to bash EA, and have nothing to add, to the fairly interesting prediction this guy makes? My god, gaming forums are starting to get full of shit as of late.

OT: I dont know. Maybe we could see EA heaving 50:50 on retail/digital in like 3 years, but I have a feeling that he is not taking into account the retail boom a next console cycle will eventually provide. Also, this might only be the case with EA. They are doing OK in the digital section, but there are plenty of other big name publishers that will probably arrive to the full digital era a bit later than EA.

Never the less, I can barely wait to see how the gaming industry will evolve (or devolve?) in the next 5 years or so :-)
