Overview

After 15 long years Duke Nukem Forever hits the streets with lackluster sales. The Wii price cut effect is wearing off sales as sales drop by 51,000 (-22%). Hardware sales are down across the board, with the Wii suffering the biggest drop. This is the last week the Xbox 360 will be up year on year as next week will be one year since the Xbox 360 S launched. The Wii passes the 87 million mark and the 3DS crosses the 3 million mark. Other than the PlayStation 3, software sales are down week on week and year on year. Software milestones this week: Wii Sports passes 77 million; and Mortal Kombat (PS3) crosses the one million mark. Seven games sold over 100,000 and the top 14 sold over 50,000.

Worldwide Hardware

Hardware

Week on week sales are down across the board. The Wii sold the most hardware this week with 182,000 units sold, a decrease of 51,000 (-22%). The PlayStation 3 is in second this week, with sales of 127,000 units, a decrease of 11,000 (-8%). The Xbox 360 is in last for the home consoles, but remains above all the handhelds. It sold 117,000 units this week, a decrease of 10,000 (-8%). The DS sold 94,000 units, down 5,000 (-5%) compared to last week. The 3DS sold 80,000 units, this is a decrease of 12,000 (-13%). The PSP falls 5,000 (-6%) this week to 77,000 sold. Total week on week sales decreased 94,000 (-12%) to 677,000 units.

Total year on year sales are down 184,000 (-21%).

Hardware Home Consoles

The Wii is as at the top for a third straight week. After three weeks of increases sales do drop this week, but it does remain well above the other two home consoles. The PlayStation 3 remains ahead of the Xbox 360 for the nineteenth straight week as the gap between the two is down to 10,000 units.

Hardware Handhelds

Worldwide Software

Four games debuted in the top 40 this week, which is one more than last week. InFamous 2 (PS3) debuted at the top with sales of 320,000, which is 45,000 more than the first game in the series. The game launched in America and EMEAA and will launch in Japan on July 7.

Yakuza: Of the End (PS3) debuted at number two with sales just below the top game, with 309,000. The game launched in Japan, with no plans to be released elsewhere.

Red Faction: Armageddon (X360) debuted at number nine with sales of 73,000. The PlayStation 3 version debuted at number 16 with sales of 44,000. The game launched in all three regions.

The PC version debuted at number 27 with sales of 30,000. The game debuted in EMEAA and will debut in America on next week’s charts. After 15 years of development, changing engines and even changing developers the game does not live up to the hype that has built up over the years.

The DS is down 402,000 (-32%) and the PSP is down 246,000 (-46%). Total combined software is down 1.35 million (-18%) games sold year on year.

Software Home Consoles

The PlayStation 3 for the first time since the week of April 23 takes the top spot in software sales as sales increase after two weeks of drops. The Wii takes the second spot as software sales drop in line with the hardware drop this week and the Xbox 360 is in third as sales drop for a third straight week.

Software Handhelds

3DS software sales drop for a second straight week, but that will change next week as its biggest game to date, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, launches in Japan and EMEAA and will launch in America the following week. DS software remains well ahead of the PSP as it outsold the PSP by a margin of nearly 3:1.

A good week for inFAMOUS 2, Wii and Duke Nukem! Even if it isn't the best game of all time, the sales are still respectable IMO...

I wonder how much of a boost Ocarina Of Time 3DS will give the 3DS...and when did this comments section change? Shows how long it's been since I've posted on one of these threads ;)

PS3 software numbers look good. Wonder if the trend over 360 will continue.

We´re in the tornado season for vgchartz. Everything gets tossed around with no clue as to what these goofy numbers are telling us. Come late September, order will be restored in time to enjoy the Holiday season.

typo at the beginning for Worldwide Hardware
"Week on week sales are down across the board. The Wii sold the most hardware this week with 282,000 units sold, a decrease of 51,000 (-22%)."
should be 182,000

Pretty much expected numbers all around. I was hoping for more from Infamous 2 (still had a great FW though!)

L.A Noire is having great legs!

Hello William D'Angelo you put Wii sales incorrectly at "The Wii sold the most hardware this week with 282,000 units sold, a decrease of 51,000 (-22%)." but it should be 182,000 K

Yes, but numbers you see in this report refer to sales in EMEAA, but since Duke was much more popular in US we should expect much higher sales in North America especially since preorders were around 270 k of XBOX 360 + PS3. So sales will probably hit around 450 k - 550 k combined next week.
