BioWare: Mass Effect MMO "Makes Sense" - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 11 April 2011 / 2,406 Views

Last week we reported on a few Mass Effect 3 details coming out of the newest Game Informer, which has Mass Effect 3 as its cover feature. There’s more news coming out of that same issue, but it might not be the kind you were hoping for.

BioWare Executive Producer Casey Hudson disclosed to the magazine that the Mass Effect team has yet to figure out a workable multiplayer component for the sci-fi franchise, but he does see the allure of an MMO.

"We’ve been trying to think of a way that makes sense for people to experience Mass Effect with their friends,” Hudson commented. He further added that they haven’t found a way to did this yet and that because of this; they don’t have any news to announce regarding this matter at this time. Although he did add that “obviously, multiplayer is something we want to do more of in the future as a company.”

Asked about Mass Effect and its compatibility with the MMO genre, Hudson admits that he feels it’s a good match.

“A lot of people say that they want to see an MMO, I think that kind of makes sense for this universe,” he added.

Hudson also said that he thinks that’s part of the purpose of the game. Saving the galaxy so you can live in it and that for any great IP, it has to be a world worth saving.

“I think Mass Effect has that quality to it. If you get rid of the Reapers and win that, wouldn’t it be amazing to just live on the Citadel or just take a ship to Omega? That makes sense.”

While this in no way confirms that Mass Effect will be an MMO, don’t be surprised if BioWare does a Mass Effect MMO spin-off. If that ever happens, you ready for some guild raids aboard the Normandy and having gun blueprints as loot?

I won't buy it.

Not interested in WoW re-skinned with Mass Effect textures.
Mass Effect is perfect as a single player RPG.

If it's not broke don't fix it.

I never thought of Mass Effect as an MMO until now. I must say the potential is there to make a TERRIFIC one. Perhaps have the plot from the past cycle that the reapers destroyed?

I didnt understand the hype around Mass Effect until I finally picked up ME2 last august (a bargain at the price it was at then). I may have to give it a try if they ever do make an MMO, although Ill reserve judgement until such a time.

I've never played an MMO and have decided I never will.

If Bioware go ahead and do this they will screw with my plans, and I will be forced to pick it up.

Don't see the point. ME is a RPG, not multiplayer game. I couldn't even understand why they'd even consider adding a multiplayer aspect to 3. But if they did it would be like any other MMO, in the shadow of WoW.

I'm sure it would be great and it would get millions of subscriptions but I won't play it. I just don't get why MMOs are popular.

mass effect MMO? as long as it still has the same gameplay as mass effect it would work. but like the KOTR MMO coming out, it will most likely be WoW in space

A Mass Effect MMORPG makes no sense and I have both Mass Effect games having beat each of them at least thrice.

The Old Republic MMORPG is the test case for EA. If one of the most beloved brands dating back to the 1970s cannot usurp the World of Warcraft's crown, then nothing can including Dragon Age and Mass Effect MMORPGs.

Hmm...I know how I feel about this. Sten is this a good idea.

Sten: NO.

Arishok, what are you feelings about a Mass Effect MMO? Good idea?

Arishok: NO.

Well there you have it.

No! I seriously will slit my wrists. They've already made MMO's out of my favorite games FF and KOTOR. Now mass Effect gah.jk

On the note if they let you be a reaper going around the universe and time killing civilizations I will change my mind.

I would jizz all over if they could make a MMO of Mass Effect and put it on the 360.

I would pay $50 a month for that!

NO! is quite simply the only answer to this... whilst I can definately see how a competative multiplayer aspect could be a good addition as long as they keep it within the fiction of the game, they cannot make an MMO work for it because storybased MMO's are pointless after you complete the storyline.

While what he says does make sense, I'd rather they didn't make it an MMO. One, because every WRPG seems to be trying to turn into an MMO or massively multiplayer game and two. because it would probably take both development attention and fanbase away from the MMO they're already making, Old Republic.

VGChartz, please allow me to use caps-lock in order to be very clear:

SINGLE PLAYER DRIVEN GAMES DO NOT NEED MULTIPLAYER JUST FOR THE SAKE OF HAVING IT! IT DOES NOT GARANTEE 20 MILLION SALES!

Phew.
