Square Enix Apologizes for Lackluster Final Fantasy XIV - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 22 October 2010 / 10,885 Views

Since its release last month on the PC, Final Fantasy XIV has had largely negative feedback, stemming from gameplay and interface issues. If it means anything, the game currently has a Metascore of 50/100.

Square Enix has taken notice of the harsh criticism, and apologized in an important notice, which says they are aware of the feedback, and their development and management teams give their sincerest gratitude. Also, they say they're carefully considering community feedback and that the game is constantly growing and evolving.

Considering that Square Enix knows that there are problems, the question is what does this mean for the upcoming PS3 version, which is set to release March next year? The game could potentially receive a delay, as they should know that they can't release the game as it is when it's suffering from quality. By the time the PS3 version releases, the game should hopefully have its issues fixed so the game doesn't end up being the blunder that the PC version currently is. Given some time, maybe the PC version's quality will improve as well.

@Fab_GS

Because those games Sucked (especially XIII) if you want Metacritic to be "your" opinion because you can't make want for yourself thats ok but fans know that those games were terrible and a big disappointment.

i had a feeling that the reason why ffxiii blew it is cuz wada took to much control over its development and gave too much command over what he wanted it to be. the same thing probably happened with this one. he needs to freaking lay off, he did not create the franchise, and those who have worked on it for years know what theyre freaking doing

Seriously how the hell could they fk this up? not even FFXI was this fked up in the begining, didn't they learn anything from the years of FFXI???

As one of the people who upgraded their video card just for this game and preordered a copy of the game...I feel very cheated by how bad this game is. When you attach the name Final Fantasy to a game gamers expect higher than a 50% metacritic review. That's disgraceful and Square Enix should offer full refunds to those who preordered if they were as good a company as people pretend they are.

It's going well Yoichi and co.
So far you fucked up Final Fantasy XIII,denied a VII remake,gone american in an effort to join EA and Activison at the top of the publisher line...and failed.Now you fucked up XIV,and if Versus XIII goes to the 360...you fucked that up too.
In other news of the japanese development community and gaming community at large,consoles are underselling,games are underselling,their lead developers are either insulting the japanese development industry or running off to the west and the new Dante looks about as impressive as my shitzu's shit....Japan....it's going well (Y)

I am a huge fan of the most squaresoft games, but when actually did SquareEnix "pump out" any masterpieces lately? I can't really remember. FFXIII? That was decent, but no way a masterpiece since its probably one of the weakest games of the series. Last Remannt? uh..not really. Crystal Bearers? Hell, no...

Kingdom Hearts Birth By sleeep (on handheld) was pretty good, but otherwise i cant really remember any masterpieces from SquareEnix in the last couple years, specially on a home console. The good times are sadly over.

The big problem here is that Square fans do not want a North Americanized games; and the North American press will count what is normal for an American game, as a flaw in a Japanese game.

Square should Final Fantasy a Final Fantasy game, and stop trying to appeal to North America's "hardcore game must haves" checklist; that's not how Square gained its fans in the first place.

They should have just waited until March (probably later) to release the game on PC alongside the PS3 version.

FFXIV has zero content.... good thing they extended the 30 day trial to 60, but if the game doesn't receive a large amount of content by then im sure alot of people r going to quit.

lol im the only person ever to have like X-2, Xll was average at best, Xlll just a little bit better then Xll. what they should apologize for is SO4....

FFXII was an amazing game, I never understood the hate for it. FFX-2 and FFXIII, on the other hand, I can understand. FFXIII had a great battle system, as well as a good BG soundtrack and art direction, but that's it. The story and characters, which for me are usually the strong points of FF games, are just...ugh. The worst in FF history. Square Enix are trying way too hard to appease Western gamers. And then here they completely rushed FFXIV to release.

@Squeak: Although I can somewhat see where you're coming from, it's not like Wada knows what he's doing either.

if the ps3 version was out right now, i would buy it, the problems that the game is having arent permanent problems lol, its not like a regular console game, it'll be receiving regular updates

Seems more like PC gamers were used to Beta test the game. After all the main FF fanbase is on consoles right?

This game is coming to the ps3 too, right? If so, it will most likely bomb if Square doesn't fix whatever is wrong.

Even if XII didnt look like a traditional FF title it was still great.It's an almost perfect RPG. But I agree about X-2 and XIII.x-2 sucked bigtime and XIII was just ordinary good.

@Salnax

The game was co-developed by Level 5 and Square-Enix. Square-Enix and Nintendo are the publishers.

Squeakthedragon (on 22 October 2010)

The last truly great RPGs out of Square Enix were FFXII and The World Ends with You. Those are five and three years old, respectively.

In point of fact, it is Wada who realizes that Square has become sluggish under its own weight and practices and is demanding change to streamline productions.

The real problem at Square is that the remaining primary development leads they have left, such as Nomura, seem very out of touch with how games are developed these days. They are fixated on a particular kind of Square "quality" that they only know how to achieve through production methods that don't scale up well to the complexity of this generation of games.

Square's fetish for hyper detailed art with a certain "pristine" form of character design and modeling may create very polished art, but it takes too long to make the way they do it. Their developers believe that it isn't possible to create elaborate game worlds with the visual fidelity this generation requires - showing how ignorant they are of what the rest of the world is doing. (People who think Western games this generation are "ugly" compared to Japanese games are judging artistic style - not quality of construction. A game like Assassin's Creed 2 equals and surpasses a game like FFXIII in a technical sense. with a far larger game world created in less than half the time.)

It seems FF13 won't be the worst of the series after all.

Let's hope for FF fans (I used to be one of them) that they will improve the game before its release on PS3.

Well unfortunately for SE. The PC MMO gamers are as forgiving as they once were. When FF11 launched there was still some kindness and patience for PC gamers. These days not so much. So while they will fix up the game for the PS3 launch. By then the PC gamers are going to be gone except for the Hard FF Fans.

Glad they understand the situation they got going. Keep supporting it and listen to user feedback and then when the ps3 version is ready make a relaunch.

You can also make it up with a wonderful ffv13 ;3

At least it sounds like they take failure pretty seriously. I guess they can't pump out masterpiece after masterpiece. Everyone makes mistakes. The important thing is that they are aware of it.

They'll definitely patch the PC version as well. It won't be inferior to the PS3 version, that's for sure.

  • 0
AngelosL (on 22 October 2010)

Maybe the PC version will improve in the future,and reach a state which the game will be acceptable.But that's not the point.The point is that a company famous for its production values released a game on alpha stage.In my opinion early releases marked this generation, and quality games are becoming more rare by this strategy ...Something must change.

@Rafux
I HATED X-2, XII and XIII. But I won't ask them to apologize because the majority liked them.
Plus, FF "fans" are extremely varied (some like only the SNES FFs, some the PS FFs...etc). You shouldn't generalize the whole fanbase into one.

  • -1
Fab_GS (on 23 October 2010)

Why the hell should they apologize for X-2, XI, XII and XIII? All of those games got over 80+ in Metacritic (i.e. The majority liked/loved them). Just because you hated them doesn't mean they should apologize to you.

I like the game.... id easily give it an 8/10.... there are some issues but its not that bad. Its better then FFXI.

Lyrikalstylez : FFXIII has a 85% score, it's a good game, so why should they apologize ?
