Americas Preorders Chart, 27th Feb 2010 - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 02 March 2010 / 9,719 Views

With an enormous 130,000 pre-orders this week alone, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 looks like being the biggest release of the year so far with around 435,000 pre-orders on 360 and 315,000 pre-orders on PS3. Due to the PS3 beta in late November, PS3 pre-orders for the title had been leading 360 until just a few weeks ago. In a similar fashion to MAG which actually sold less in week one than total pre-orders, I expect the 360 version to sell around 650,000 units this week and the PS3 version to sell around 350,000 units. This illustrates the point that pre-orders have to be taken in context when comparing the performace of different games - factors such as early pre-order bonuses, public betas or heavy advertising will mean that some games pick up pre-orders at a faster pace than others.

http://thegamershub.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/battlefield-bad-company-2.jpg

Another good example of this is God of War III vs Mass Effect 2. Back at the end of 2009, God of War III pre-orders were significantly higher than Mass Effect 2 and many expected a similar pre-launch boost for GOW III as was seen for Mass Effect 2 (along with Bad Company 2 on 360) but this hasn't happened. The reason that pre-orders haven't seen similar jumps closer to launch is simply that those who were intending to pre-order the game have done so a while back. The God of War Collection pushed a lot of pre-orders and most God of War fans are simply waiting now for the release. Mass Effect 2 was a slightly different situation in that the game had been mostly lost under the stampede of Modern Warfare 2, Assassin's Creed 2, ODST, BioShock 2, Splinter Cell and so on in late 2009. However, when reviews started to come in and the title was getting scores of 95%+, the game picked up a lot of pre-orders just before launch and went from being in line to sell 400,000 week one to doing 750,000. From this point of view, the weekly change is probably a more important thing to monitor than total pre-orders to date if you wish to estimate where a title will end up.

Final Fantasy XIII and Pokemon Heart Gold / Soul Silver are two futher examples of titles which started slowly but are really picking up pre-orders now with over 400,000 for Final Fantasy and nearly 300,000 for Pokemon. Both are in line for opening weeks of around 700,000 units (360+PS3 for Final Fantasy). Two titles that I expect to start picking up in weekly pre-orders over the next month are Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Alan Wake due to the recently announced May release dates for both games. At this early stage I'd estimate that Galaxy 2 should be good for a 750,000 week one and Alan Wake should be looking towards a 350,000-400,000 opening based on similar titles performances but of course we will be monitoring the pick-up rate over the coming weeks to see where these titles end up. Splinter Cell: Conviction is another title that should begin to pick up again soon now that most of the Q1 releases are out of the way.

Check back next week for the latest pre-order news.

Halo: Reach and GT5 are going to be monstrous.

Pre-orders are picking up steam...I guess people are starting to dig out of the holiday release hole.

MH3 should get at least bet 80k -120k preordered before launch. It could be one of Wii's stronger 3rd party showing in a long time. Redsteel2 just has the worst luck launching a week "AFTER" GOW:III. It's like Ubisoft wants this game to fail or something!? Still I expect RS2 to sell 80-100k in it's first 2 weeks of sales despite the monster that is GOW:III!!!

C'mon Red Dead Redemption! I've read comments from only PC gamers who are getting a console for Red Dead Redemption. It really looks like it could be that good. Again, I think it can win GOTY!

restored_lost (on 03 March 2010)

theres a lot of incentive to pre order.
1) you get free stuff
2) it garantee's your collectors edition
3) it gets you cool with the staff, who will let you slide on stuff alot.

Also, the ratio for FFXIII is nearing 3:1. It was much closer to 2:1 a few weeks ago. This jibes with the numbers at my store. As of this afternoon, we had 47 pre-orders on ps3, 12 360, and 4 for the 360 bundle.

  • 0
makingmusic476 (on 03 March 2010)

@Cooltown: In GameStop's case, pre-orders a used as a direct gauge for the demand of a title. We get enough copies of a game to equal ~1.5x the number of pre-orders for that game. For example, if we have 10 copies of MLB2k10 reserved, we'll get 15 copies day one. Without reserves, we wouldn't get any stock at all.

If you don't tell people you want a game, why the hell would they stock it? Reserves are basically telling stores, yeah, I want this game, and it ensures they order not only a copy for you, but also copies for other people.

I still believe God of War 3 will have a monster opening. Once the reviews come in and the marketing starts. I predict around 600 -
700 K pre orders right before launch.

  • 0
Cooltown (on 02 March 2010)

I can't believe how many people still preorder games these days. I just walk in the store day 1 and buy it, why would you do it any other way?

GoW3's preorders are pretty amazing. Single player title, exlcusive on PS3, no online features, 400,000+ preorders in America alone. This is most certainly a record.

  • 0
Lyrikalstylez (on 02 March 2010)

im telling you Halo:Reach is gonna me Massive and quick everyone start pre-ordering Alan Wake because its gonna be amazing!!!!

O and I will be getting GOW3 on day 1 but not pre-ordering and plus there are people who pre-order games yet dont pick them up....so These numbers really arent too reliable !!

Damn GoW is gonna have a huge week 1!!! Pokemon and FF13 are showing their true colors.

Red steel 2 though has slowed down though... i really thought this could do 100k+ FW, but it will struggle to do half of that. On the other hand MH3 is looking pretty good now, will it be the Hardcore 3rd party title no nail it finally?

  • 0
kopstudent89 (on 02 March 2010)

OMG!! MH3 :D and Damn it Yakuza doesnt look like it will do well :(

  • 0
huaxiong90 (on 02 March 2010)

@BoneArk: The PS3 version is dwarfing the 360 version. I don't think that's the problem here.

  • 0
binary solo (on 02 March 2010)

Looks like FFXIII for PS360 will be close to 500K pre-orders by the final week than 400K. Between 600 & 700K launch week sales perhaps?

Ugh, there's a Zhu Zhu pets game?

God of War III should easily exceed 450K pre-orders by the time it drops off this list. looking good there.

  • 0

Yakuza 3 - go. Awesome game!!!!!!! buy a ps3 with god of war 3 and yakuza 3 guys. the ps3 console is awesome

  • 0
Tridrakious (on 02 March 2010)

God of War III is likely Sony's biggest game this year.

Well at least first half, depends on when GT5 is released.

So i don't think Sony is really worrying about God of War III not selling very well, but I would like to see next weeks numbers jump up quite a bit. I would be happy seeing a boost of 50k.

Anyway, if Sony isn't spending money on really advertising their big games, then they need to step up and advertise their medium to small games (as an example of my train of thought, GT and God of War= Huge/ Uncharted and LittleBigPlanet= Big/ Resistance and inFAMOUS= Medium/ MotorStorm= Small) way more.

Where is the campaign for Heavy Rain? White Knight Chronicles? MAG's commerical was good, but that one commerical was not good enough. God of War III so far hasn't had really anything buzz worthy.

Final Fantasy XIII is being advertised for 360. MLB 2010: The Show is a baseball game. Everyone knows that sports games come out every year.

  • 0
BoneArk (on 02 March 2010)

I wonder if Metroid: Other M will be there soon. I going to pre-order Monster Hunter 3 next week.

  • 0
BoneArk (on 02 March 2010)

@jonnhytesta

Blame Square Enix, they're advertising the game on the 360 and not giving love to the PS3.

  • 0

those ff13 preorders look really low.

  • 0

@Kantor: Neither do I. But if what iWarMachine said is true, it should increase next week.

  • 0
ProdigyBam (on 02 March 2010)

Yea, i know its Amazon but it rose from 20-25 last week to 10-15 this week.
And its much higher than FF13 (360) and BF:BC2 (PS3).

yes, the GoW3 preorders follows a weird pattern ...

I still consider we will see a big increase the next week with the review+marketing ...

  • 0
qmoney88 (on 02 March 2010)

The only thing that does make sense and maybe we will end up seeing a much bigger increase is after the release of bfbc2 and ffxiii, maybe then the preorders will see a huge increase. I was really hoping gow 3 would get a 1.5mil week one in, I know thats extremely optimistic and probably not likely but it could if sony decides they want to actually market it. Im just not sure how its going to do in europe, I already know its going to sell next to nothing in japan but maybe europe will push this thing past the 1.5 mil mark. heres to hoping.

  • 0
darthdevidem01 (on 02 March 2010)

EXCELLENT a 700K opening for FF13 combined will make it higher than FF12's....a definite increase in popularity for the franchise!

Lets see what this final week of advertising does

@CGI

The adverts began on 1st March....so their effects will be seen next week!

  • 0
iWarMachine (on 02 March 2010)

the gow3 advertising starts next week along with all the reviews...the pre-orders will be 550k in launch, quote me on it.

  • 0
DevilishSix (on 02 March 2010)

I CAN NOT BELIEVE Just Cause 2 is getting no love whatsoever, not even in the top 30 preorders? Are you kidding me, that game looks stout and an early review already said its one of the most fun open world games they have ever played.

I sure hope its a sleeper hit like borderlands cause they have spent 3 years developing the game and it looks real fun.

  • 0
3francs60 (on 02 March 2010)

don't cry. GOW 3 is 3 weeks to go, BBC2 is next week, so higher will be gow3 the week before lunch, probably very good legs as Uncharted 2.

God of War FAIL. :-(
I has a sad. :'(

People also may pre-order to get the in-game skins and not pick up the game as well... So sales may be well below expectations :-(

@OkeyDokey: Well, frankly it won't be good if it truly only does "Mass Effect 2 numbers".

  • 0
--OkeyDokey-- (on 02 March 2010)

I suppose God of War only has a few reviews and marketing hasn't started yet :/

The strong early preorders have resulted in a lot of omptimistic predictions and now I worry it's going to be called a flop when it "only" does ME 2 numbers.

  • 0
routsounmanman (on 02 March 2010)

Monster Hunter 3 preorders should gradually pick up, specially after the demo launch. Red Steel isn't doing too shabby.

  • 0

That we will

  • 0
huaxiong90 (on 02 March 2010)

I guess next week will reveal all.

  • 0
qmoney88 (on 02 March 2010)

@huaxiong90 Ya I just dont understand why they dont push their exclusives harder, doesnt make sense to me. Having shows at 12:30 in the morning and posting stuff on the internet isnt enough to convince the casual gamer to go purchase their games, but I guess they want to see all their games sales pale in comparison to microsoft. I guarantee you if gow 3 was on the 360 it would twice as many copies because microsoft knows how to advertise their games. Hopefully gow is able to at least push a mil week one but who knows. Bfbc2 and ffxiii are lookin really good though, the thing that amazes me but sort of doesnt at the same time is halo reach, my god there isnt even a release date yet lol, that thing is gonna sell through the roof like usual.

@DirtyP: Microsoft said previously they have that covered in regards to Alan Wake..

  • 0
huaxiong90 (on 02 March 2010)

@qmoney88: Glad I'm not alone on this one.

It went down from last week.

I'm starting to worry about God of War III.

  • 0
DirtyP2002 (on 02 March 2010)

BBC2 on Xbox360 might sell 600k in NA alone. So I predict 800k first week worldwide. That is something. Halo Reach with more than 4k new preorders and still like 28 weeks to go.

Alan Wake needs some great advertising. That would help.

  • 0
huaxiong90 (on 02 March 2010)

What's up with God of War III?

Good for BF: BC2.

FFXIII is looking excellent. Same for Splinter Cell: Conviction.

Good numbers for Alan Wake, scary numbers for Halo: Reach.

SMG2, Pokemon Heart Gold are looking excellent.

  • 0
qmoney88 (on 02 March 2010)

wow gow3 didnt get nearly as many as I thought it would, thats pretty bad, sony is pretty retarded for not having a fully fleshed out campaign going for it. I hate when they do this for their biggest releases, if they ever want to sell games like microsoft they have to start advertising like they want to. Some people need to get fired.

  • 0
Nintendogamer (on 02 March 2010)

MH3 in the list! 25th not bad.
