Microsoft Lifts Xbox 360 Minimum 720p and Anti-Aliasing Mandate - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 03 September 2009 / 2,734 Views

In a recent article with Blackrock Studio's technical director, David Jeffrries, he revealed that Microsoft have removed an item from the Technical Certification Requirements (TCR's) that say all Xbox 360 games must run at a minimum 720p resolution when in HD mode.

Jeffrries says this was done earlier in the year so that developers could be "free to make the trade-off between resolution and image quality as we see fit."

TCR's are technical rules that all games for a specific platform must abide by to be able to be certified for release. These rules have sometimes been broken though, most notibally by Halo 3 which runs at a progressive 1152x640.

Joystiq confirmed with a "trusted source" who is familiar with Microsoft's TCR's that Jeffrries claim is indeed true.

Another thing which has changed is that developersno longer have to utilise full screen Anti-Aliasing in games.

@naznatips

I don't doubt this existed, but it was probably never enforced and some accountant-like person decided it needed to be cleaned up.

Wow. MS first puts out a motion controller then removes the HD requirement for its games. I guess this is not the HD-gaming generation as initially marketed. Do you think Nintendo will still release Wii HD?

Some of the top selling 360 games are not compliance to 720p, wonder why they could pass the requirement at the first place :P

Call of Duty 4 = 1024x600 (2xAA)
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion = 1024x600 (2xAA)
Fable II = 1120x720 (blur filter, 2xMSAA)
Halo 3 = 1152x640 (no AA)

Maybe they are preparing for the "casual" wave of games they expect when natal launches? :)

I call BS that the rule ever existed. Way too many "exceptions" for it to be true (CoD4, Halo 3, GTAIV, etc.).

I wonder if this also had a factor to the lift:

in that link Epic game's Mark Rein says that over half of Gears of War players don't have a HDTV
