It would be interesting to see the impact it will have a 100$ price cut permanently on both consoles, this or next year, alongside GTA VI.

It is very interesting to see that a weak Xbox hasn’t led to a surge in PlayStation sales. Where did all the “Xbox only” gamers go? PC? I would assume not Switch…hmm.

I'd say it is a mix of Xbox gamers switching to PC and people still using Xbox One and PS4 that haven't upgraded. The most popular games - Fortnite, Roblox, Minecraft, CoD, etc - are still playable on Xbox One and PS4.

Also, isn't the lead that PS5 has over Series X/S in the US and NA bigger than the lead that PS4 ever had over Xbox One there? Wouldn't the loss in market share this gen in Xbox's biggest market be considered as a "surge in PlayStation sales" considering that PS5 is outpacing PS4 in the US?

PS5 is about 1.37 million ahead of PS4 in the US. However, it is millions behind in Europe. So overall the PS5 is over 3 million behind worldwide.

The gap will increase in Europe in my opinion.

We won't know for sure unless Sony gives a regional breakdown or a European hardware sales tracking firm releases the data. Since Chris Dring left GameIndustry.biz late last year, no official European hardware data is known. This site now delays European numbers until after US NPD comes out I'm assuming to extrapolate a similar percentage for hardware? I am not sure what algorithm they use now to arrive at their current Europe numbers since then, we'll find out after Oct 8th. Other than if reliable sources leak data like Vandal Spain last week for some indications. But we do know now that Europe numbers here this year are less accurate then in years prior which Trunks confirmed already. So if the gap shrinks any or increases at this point, who knows. Because of this and for accuracy reasons the best method of showing the difference between PS5 and PS4 globally at least would be to use current shipment numbers which would be a gap of 2.1M in favor of PS4. I do hope we get some official sources in Europe soon though.

Considering the consoles just keep getting more expensive as time goes on. There is likely a push to PC or just hanging on to the older hardware for longer. I'm sure there is also a percentage that fell out of gaming.
