VGChartz Methodology: Hardware estimates are based on retail sampling and trends in individual countries, which are then extrapolated to represent the wider region. This typically allows us to produce figures that end up being within 10% of the actual totals.
This data is regularly compared against official shipment figures released by the console manufacturers and figures estimated by regional trackers with greater market coverage than ourselves. We then update our own estimates to bring them into line with those figures. This can result in frequent changes often within a short space of time, but we feel it's important to prioritise accuracy over consistency.
Note that our estimates are based on sell-through data (units sold to consumers). In almost all cases the figures released by console manufacturers are based on shipment data (sell-in), where as soon as a device has left the factory and entered the supply chain for delivery it is considered a sale. This is why there is always a difference between the companies’ figures (sell-in) and VGChartz estimates (sell-through), even after we’ve made adjustments. The one exception to that is when a console has been discontinued and the remaining stock has finally sold out – at that point the figures will match.

Switch is holding up nicely!
Xbox Series X/S is ummm… yeah.
Xbox literally had a weaker holiday quarter WW this year than ANY of the Wii U’s holidays (excluding 2016…obv). It’s just over at this point…Microsoft Gaming is completely lost from a hardware standpoint.
Xbox's numbers in December 2023 were quite good because of extreme discounts. 150$ for the S, and 350$ for the X. Just saying for those that are wondering why it's such an extreme YoY drop
All 3 systems down. But for an 8 years old handheld - 36% is quite good.
-36% is pretty standard for a system in its last year. What’s impressive abt NSW is more the fact that it sold through 3mil WW in a single month. Those are absolutely incredible figures, and puts PS2 & DS to shame.
Yes. And whats even more impressive to me is the fact, Switch had its best FY 6 and 7, any system ever had. 17,97 million and 15,70 million is just crazy! FY8 i think it will fall short of PS2's 13,73 million but it was ahead so many years that it does not matter. In te long therm we have to see what happens but 155 million LTD till march 2027 is the lowballed floor for the Switch!
2024 yearly-
PS5- 6.99M
Switch + xbox= 7.1M
GTA's fanbase is much larger than Xbox and Playstation combined, GTA6 isn't releasing on PC at launch, and no new GTA game released on either console so far.
I think you're underestimating pricesdrops and GTA6 but time will tell who was right! If something like College Football can push sales, and PS5 breaks November record without any groundbreaking releases, it's a foregone conclusion that GTA6 will do much more.
I'm looking forward to the Worldwide totals.
Just as a reminder of what Switch looked like at its peak:
Switch's December 2020: 6,028,658
Small typo in 2nd paragraph. Should say "millions" after 0.71 I assume. Otherwise they sold less that 1 individual unit. lol
