Konami Announces Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 02 June 2023 / 4,692 Views

Konami has announced Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1. It includes the first three Metal Gear Solid games and is set to launch this fall. The platforms were not revealed.

Read details on the collection below:

Leading up to Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snaker Eater‘s release, players will have the chance to relive the first three entries into the Metal Gear Solid franchise through the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1. Infiltrate enemy fortresses all over the globe, stealthily complete your missions and experience the thrilling cinematic story of the Metal Gear series.

The Vol. 1 collection contains the beginning of the Metal Gear series in one complete package including

  • Metal Gear Solid – In this game, Solid Snake abandons his retirement plans and seclusion in Alaska, in order to take on a mission regarding Big Boss’s corpse. The story follows the infiltration mission that would later be known as “the Shadow Moses Incident”. Not only is the secret behind Solid Snake’s birth revealed, but also his brother makes an appearance: Liquid Snake, who was born from the same genetic material. The story about genetics and rogue nuclear weapons was labeled by the media as the 20th century’s ultimate video-game scenario, with the game receiving praise for using the Sony PlayStation’s 3D graphics to provide an immersive infiltration experience. The game featured many new ideas, utilizing the controller’s vibration function, as well as various secrets hidden within the game’s packaging. This title was the third game released in the official history of the Metal Gear franchise.
  • Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (HD Collection version) – This game depicts two different events: Solid Snake investigating a new kind of Metal Gear as part of the Tanker Incident, as well as FOXHOUND’s newest member, Raiden, taking on a group of terrorists who have captured an off-shore facility in the Big Shell Incident. This game, released on the PlayStation 2, introduced players to the character of Raiden, who inherited many techniques and ideas from Solid Snake. In addition to a first-person aiming feature, players also had access to a variety of new actions, such as holding up enemies and also disposing of their bodies. It was labeled “the best gameplay system of the 21st century.” An ultimate edition of the game called Substance was released later. This title was the fourth game released in the official history of the Metal Gear franchise.
  • Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (HD Collection version) – The story that tells the beginning of the epic saga. It covers the events of both Virtuous Mission and Operation Snake Eater, detailing how the man code-named Naked Snake earned the title of Big Boss. While previous games in the Metal Gear series took place in more urban settings and involved infiltrating buildings, this game is set in an unforgiving jungle. In addition to hiding in the shadows, players can use uniforms and face paint as camouflage to blend in with their surroundings. This gameplay system was expanded upon in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. An edition boasting the ultimate survival experience called Subsistence was released later. This title was the fifth game released in the official history of the Metal Gear franchise.

If someone argues these games can't run on it...well they are clearly being idiots. Expect such things to be said up or until a Direct comes along and this gets announced on Switch because...that's just what happens for some reason and I don't know if its own the third parties or Nintendo to do that.

I don't think anyone would argue that games from PS2 era and earlier can't run on Switch.

We only question why old games are put on the cloud instead.

So... a downgraded Legacy Collection? I know there will be a Vol 2 ofc, but this is still less for now

This is fantastic since MGS3 Subsistence had these games. The more the merrier.

Hope the whole series (or at least the main ones) makes it to modern platforms eventually, especially PC.

This gives me some hope for a Metal Gear Solid 4 port.

MGS4 needs a good port that runs faster. That game had so many and such long load times/screens in-between. That's all i remember about that game xD

I think they fixed that in a later patch that let you install the full game. Originally Sony had a limit on the install filesize, so MGS4 tried to work around that by installing only portions from the disc as you progressed through the game while erasing old ones to never exceed the total filesize limit. When I first played the game years after launch, it installed the full game right away.

@ William D'Angelo: I wasn't sure if you wanted to update this article, as Konami has now confirmed additional details about it. For an MGS fan such as myself, this collection is looking to be VERY good:
1) Includes Metal Gear
2) Includes Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake
3) Includes Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions (yes!)
4) MGS2 and MGS3 are based on the HD ports version released for PS3/Xbox 360
5) Will have "minimal changes" due to older licensing contracts. Majority (all?) of music in Metal Gear titles is original, so I'm sure that is good. Maybe small things like posters or brand names that were in original titles might get changed?

I've been thinking about getting the Legacy Collection for PS3. Nothing here is making me think twice about that purchase since this has less games.

So 4, 5 and maybe Peace Walker in Vol 2?

I don't expect 4 tbh. Probably too expensive to port.

Mgs4 is forever stuck in ps3 limbo haha,

Maybe they should bundle mgs4 and revengeance remaster that's a nice cash grab!

It's a shame we can't get twin snakes, or a mgs1 remake. I can't even play it on the switxh.
