Switch vs DS Sales Comparison - March 2023 - Sales

by William D'Angelo , posted on 01 May 2023 / 5,255 Views

The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in November 2004 in North America, December 2004 in Japan, and March 2005 in Europe, while the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

Next month is the very last strong one for the DS and Zelda ToK counter offensive on May. Price cut for the next Thanksgiving and Christmas season and it can beat the DS.

I wouldn't hope for a price cut.

I know it will not. Actually the "non price increase" is already a "price cut" in a context of sharp inflation.

December 2022 was the very last strong one for the Switch too.

I like only one game on the Switch, it is Zelda. But I had a Wii U so I did not buy the Switch.

So that means that you will buy a Switch next month for the first time so you play Zelda TotK?

It's possible that next month the gap between them may be in its biggest point

We'll see the biggest gap ( >15M) next month.

So yea, with rumours of a new system this year or early next year, i see the Switch ending at around 140-145 millions. It won't be the best selling of all time, but still nice to see a console reach heights almost as great as the PS2 and DS with bigger competition than they had. Switch will still be, imo, the healthiest generation Nintendo had. Not on the level of success of the Wii/DS era, but their IPs have grown tremendously and the overall company is seen in a better light than in that "kid family only" era.

They must be pretty nervous to launch the next one tho, since they have their share of flops too.

I think their success is now bigger than it was during the Wii/DS times.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will probably end its life at 60+ million units sold, still sold at 60$ after 6 years, becoming the second best selling Nintendo game behind Wii Sports which was a bundle in Europe and the US, the software total will cross the billion (or even already did - we'll find out next week), the machine is still being sold at 300$ on average (as the Lite's sales are lower than the regular model and the OLED), I mean they couldn't hope for a better success than this

I meant it number wise, no one will ever top the popularity of the combined DS/Wii era. But as i said tho, this is their healthiest one how their IPs have risen up in the front of the pack while even in the Wii era.

The DS sold an additional 19mil after this point. I think the Switch will sell and additional 25-28mil after this point.
