The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 3.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 3 launched in November 2006 in North America and Japan and in March 2007 in Europe. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

PS5 is doing good at 7.1m units ahead of the PS3, but still behind the PS4 by 2.8m for the same time frame. Looking at the other articles related to the Series. It is 2.6m ahead of the XBO and just over 5m ahead of the 360 for the same time frame.

The gap for PS3/360 was around 3.4m with 360 20th month was June 07 and PS3 June 08
The gap for PS4/XBO was around 11m with both of their 20 month marks in June 15
The gap for PS5/Series is around 5.5m with both of their 20 month marks in June 22

Pretty much. Or to phrase it another way, the 9th gen gap is half what it was in 8th gen.

I forget for just how long the PS3 was Sony's flagship system.
When it was still struggeling in its second year, they did EVERYTHING in their power to bring it back.
New logo, new price, new system design, new boxes for both system and games, new slogans, new ads, and new development deals. And it paid off. They turned the whole thing around and avoided an economic disaster.

It remains to be seen if the PS5 can live for that long. ^^
