The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the combined aligned sales of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S with the combined aligned sales of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

Gap change in latest month: 198,759 - PS4 & XOne

Total Combined PS5 and Xbox Series X|S Sales: 32,577,111

Total Combined PS4 and Xbox One Sales: 32,701,838

In March 2022, the gap grew in favor of the combined sales of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in the last month by 198,759 units. In the last 12 months, the PS4 and Xbox One has sold 434,573 units more.

The PS4 and Xbox One have taken a lead over the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in the latest month and is now ahead by 124,727 units.

The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in their first 17 months sold a combined 32.58 million units, while the PS4 and Xbox One have sold a combined 32.70 million units. Month 17 is March 2022 for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S , while for the PS4 and Xbox One it is March 2015.

The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have sold a combined 167.27 million units after 101 months.

Last gen's lead will probably only increase in the foreseeable future. Not much to be done when there just isn't enough stock.
