Yamauchi Talks Gran Turismo 7's Always-Online Aspect, Dynamic Weather, Car Damage, & More

Yamauchi Talks Gran Turismo 7's Always-Online Aspect, Dynamic Weather, Car Damage, & More - News

In an interview with Eurogamer, Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi has go into more detail regarding some of the most talked-about aspects of Gran Turismo 7.

On the always-online aspect of the game, Yamauchi confirms the news from the PlayStation blog post that the campaign will require an internet connection (but not arcade mode), saying that it's necessary to combat cheating:

"The requirement for the online connection isn't specific to the Cafe per se - it's just to prevent cheating overall from people trying to modify the save data, so that's the reason for the online connection...

The online connection is required for the campaign mode. The only part of the game that doesn't require an online connection is the arcade mode, because that has no effect on the save data, so that's possible. But anything that has to do with the save data requires a connection. For example things like the livery data as well - that's something that is downloaded from the online server."

He also confirmed that dynamic time and weather is a simulation that takes place in real-time, so it's not just a simple weather change but will affect the game's physics:

"It does have an effect on the physics of the game. I think that will be very interesting. And also you can set multiples of the time that it takes from real time to 100 times accelerated, so you don't necessarily need to have a full on endurance race in order for the player to experience those weather changes and how it affects their cars in the track...

We do have a simulation of where the rain would create a level of water over the track. When a car passes over it, it will spray aside, and so the racing lines will dry quicker than the other parts of the track. That's something that is simulated and does affect the grip of the course accordingly as time goes on, and the track begins to dry in different places. The air temperature, the humidity, and then the road surface temperature will also be affected by these weather changes as well."

Other nuggets of information include:

  • The team hasn't yet decided if it will include a 24 hour race in Gran Turismo 7.
  • The damage system is basically the same as the one in Gran Turismo Sport, albeit a 'little bit' improved.
  • Features will be the same between the PS4 & PS5 versions, only the quality will be different.
  • There will be cross-play between PS4 & PS5 users.
  • Development on the game began around the end of 2017.
  • The DualSense controller means that 'you should be able to do everything that you can do on a steering wheel controller with a DualSense controller' now.
  • As with Gran Turismo Sport, you can expect additional tracks and vehicles to be added post-launch. They also have other ideas for post-launch content, but can't yet reveal them.
  • Yamauchi revealed that he drives his Porsche GT3 on the Tokyo Expressway every night.

Wow so the translation was legit. I assumed it was a mistake. Why the fuck would an online connection be required for an offline SP mode? Is Ubisoft making this game? Imagine when servers are down or your connection has a blip and you get booted back to the menu. Yikes.

Does this mean that you need the paid online service from Sony? Or does the campaign mode work for free, as long as you're connected to the internet?

Alright, thank you!

My concern is whether you'll need the GT7 servers to still be up. Not paid online, but connected to the GT7 servers. You probably will, from my reading of the article. I'd love to be wrong though, as that would be a terrible decision if so.

I don't understand why you are even asking this, they said you need a connection to the internet, not the paid online. As far as I can remember all games that required a connection didn't need a paid online, such as Destiny.
Still the fans will defend it, fortunately I am a fan of gaming, I take no sides, so I will review it poorly due to these practices, what if I don't have a connection at the moment but want to play the game I paid 70dollars for? What about in the future when they remove it from the servers?

Sony removed the servers for GT5 only five months after GT6 came out.

The servers for GT6 were removed 3.5 years ago, and we still don't have GT7.

When they inevitably eliminate the servers for GT7, then you won't even be able to play all the single-player modes.

Terrible decision by a company with a terrible track record at removing servers for their games waaaaaaaay too soon.

I don't think this is a big issue. I'm actually getting interested for the first time since GT3.

So no matter how good the game might be, I will not rate it over 3 stars on reviews, due to always online connection, sorry but forza motorsport 7 manages to have offline mode. Why would I want to cheat on single player, that's like cheating myself, makes no sense, GT 1-6 had offline mode and those were fine.
They talk dynamic weather like its something amazing but its been in forza for years already.
Extra tracks after the game launch, the game's already been delayed, why not finish it before launch? Maybe they want to cash on DLC, even tough the game is already 70british pounds, around 95dollars.

An advertised price of 70 UKP is the equivalent of an advertised price of $80.81 USD.

70 UKP is after 19% VAT. Whereas Canada and U.S. prices are advertised before sales taxes. And sales taxes range from as low as 0% to as much as 15%, depending on where you live in North America, so there's just no way they could or would advertise prices here inclusive of sales taxes like they do in Europe/UK.

But I agree with what you say about needing online for single-player, that's just silly. Cheating in single-player? Why?! And who even cares if they do?
