This weekly mini-series compares the aligned launch sales of the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. 

It should be noted the Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X|S had a worldwide launch, while the PlayStation 5 launch was split over the course of two weeks. Also, the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017, while the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S launched during the holidays in November 2020.

PS5 Vs. Xbox Series X|S Vs. Switch Global:

  1. PS5: 11,027,315
  2. Switch: 10,296,083
  3. XSX|S: 6,799,665

Through the first 41 weeks available worldwide the PlayStation 5 is ahead of the Switch and Xbox Series X|S by a fair margin. The PS5 is ahead of the Switch by 0.73 million units and is 4.23 million units ahead of the Xbox Series X|S. The Switch is ahead of the Xbox Series X|S by 3.50 million units.

The PS5 has sold 11.03 million in 41 weeks worldwide, while the Switch sold 10.30 million units and the Xbox Series X|S 6.80 million units. 

Looking at the marketshare through 41 weeks, the PlayStation 5 currently leads. The PS5 has a 49.2 percent marketshare, the Switch sits at 36.6 percent, and the Xbox Series X|S at 24.2 percent.

The Switch didn't reach current PS5 sales until week 42.

PS5 Vs. Xbox Series X|S Vs. Switch US:

Through the first 41 weeks available in the US the PlayStation 5 is ahead of the Switch and Xbox Series X|S. The PS5 is ahead of the Switch by just 37,088 units and is 0.83 million units ahead of the Xbox Series X|S. The Switch is ahead of the Xbox Series X|S by 0.79 million units.

The PS5 has sold 4.07 million in 41 weeks in the US, while the Switch sold 4.03 million units and the Xbox Series X|S 3.25 million units.

Looking at the marketshare through 41 weeks, the PlayStation 5 currently leads. The PS5 has a 35.9 percent marketshare, the Switch sits at 35.5 percent, and the Xbox Series X|S at 28.6 percent.

The Switch didn't reach current PS5 sales until week 42.

PS5 Vs. Xbox Series X|S Vs. Switch Europe (40 weeks):

  1. PS5: 4,041,633

The PlayStation 5 has been available for one week less than the Xbox Series X|S in Europe. After 40 weeks the PS5 is ahead of the Switch by 1.57 million units and is 2.01 million units ahead of the Xbox Series X|S. The Switch is ahead of the Xbox Series X|S by 0.44 million units.

The PS5 has sold 4.04 million in 40 weeks in Europe, while the Switch sold 2.47 million units and the Xbox Series X|S 2.03 million units. 

Looking at the marketshare through 40 weeks, the PlayStation 5 currently leads. The PS5 has a 47.3 percent marketshare, the Switch sits at 28.9 percent, and the Xbox Series X|S at 23.8 percent.

The Switch didn't reach current PS5 sales until week 57.

PS5 Vs. Xbox Series X|S Vs. Switch Japan:

Through the first 41 weeks available in Japan the Switch is ahead of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S by a wide margin. The Switch is ahead of the PS5 by 1.72 million units and is 2.62 million units ahead of the Xbox Series X|S. The PS5 is ahead of the Xbox Series X|S by 0.90 million units.

The Switch has sold 2.70 million units in 41 weeks in Japan, while the PS5 has sold 0.98 million units, and the Xbox Series X|S 0.08 million units.

Looking at the marketshare through 41 weeks, the Switch currently leads. The Switch has a 71.8 percent marketshare, the PS5 sits at 26.1 percent, and the Xbox Series X|S at 2.1 percent.
