Valheim Sales Top 3 Million Units

Valheim Sales Top 3 Million Units - Sales

by William D'Angelo , posted on 19 February 2021 / 2,664 Views

Coffee Stain Publishing and developer Iron Gate AB announced the action-adventure RPG, Valheim, has sold over three million units.

This figure is up from two million units sold after 13 days and one million units sold after one week.

"This February has been truly wild! Less than three weeks into Early Access, we’ve already hit another milestone," said the developer. "Valheim has now been purchased by over three million brave Vikings looking to survive the 10th world of the Yggdrasil - or die trying - probably crushed by a falling tree.

"o keep up with the old norse references, this is now equivalent to 74,319 longhouses stuffed with Vikings singing songs and celebrating victory with some great tasting mead, so.. SKÅL!"

Here is an overview of the game:

A battle-slain warrior, the Valkyries have ferried your soul to Valheim, the tenth Norse world. Besieged by creatures of chaos and ancient enemies of the gods, you are the newest custodian of the primordial purgatory, tasked with slaying Odin’s ancient rivals and bringing order to Valheim.

Your trials begin at the disarmingly peaceful centre of Valheim, but the gods reward the brave and glory awaits. Venture forth through imposing forests and snow-capped mountains, explore and harvest more valuable materials to craft deadlier weapons, sturdier armor, viking strongholds and outposts. Build a mighty longship and sail the great oceans in search of exotic lands … but be wary of sailing too far...

Key features:

  • Huge procedurally-generated world - explore and inhabit mystical lands, from mysteriousforests to imposing snow-topped mountain ranges and stunning meadows, complete with their own creatures of legend to battle and wildlife to hunt.
  • Co-op PvE (2-10 players) - - Whether you want to brave the lands alone or venture with trusted allies, Valheim supports independent, player-hosted servers and unlimited world creation. We recommend playing co-op with 3-5 players.
  • Punishing dodge & block based combat system with a wide range of weapons
  • Build & sail ships - from flimsy rafts to imposing warships, build legendary vessels to conquer the seas and discover new lands.
  • Summon and defeat vengeful primordial bosses of myth and legend, and collect trophies to progress and craft new powerful items
  • Flexible house and base building system - raise mead halls, farms, settlements outposts, castles and more.
  • Intuitive item crafting - forge the finest weapons and armour, and craft food and mead.
  • Dedicated server- for players who want to run a persistent server. If you prefer not to run a server on your PC, consider renting a server at G-Portal.

Just goes to show that all those PVP survival games weren't fun. But the second that someone made a PVE style game it sells like hotcakes! Lots of games just need a quick change to be fantastic. I'm glad this game is going in a great direction now.

I'm also glad many on the Steam forums are putting down the "change it to be more PVP" crowd, because the very last thing this game ever needs, is a PVP focus.

Devs claim they took inspiration from Skyrim/BotW, two games which are SP and don't do PVP, so it makes sense that this game should put top focus on PVE/co-op.

Yeah, Monster Hunter series has been amazing as PVE/Co-Op for years now. IMO PVP multiplayer isn't fun unless it's really well made. Like there are two types of PVP multiplayer. Good and Bad. No room for a middle ground.

It can be well made, but ultimately, in all my yrs of playing PVP, I've just found it ended up being both toxic over time, and more or less filled with players using what we call "cheese builds" (as in super easy win strats, that don't require challenging yourself), so that eventually kills the fun of PVP.

I just watched Lazy Peon play Rust for the first time a couple days ago, and everyone on that map always killed one another, hardly spoke to each other and just went around griefing low geared players. None of it looked fun at all, and I've seen that happen with both Ark/Conan.

Then there's games like Halo, where I remember everyone always, always going for the OP weapons like the sniper rifle or Spartan laser, and it was so simplistic of a strat, but so boring since everyone had to follow that strat just to win.

How is this an indicator for the PVP factor being unfun in a survival game? Are we going to pretend Rust wasn't/isn't a huge success? Sounds like you were on the receiving end in one or two survival games with PVP and are trying to drive a narrative that a demanded by many feature is "unfun".

Well, the problem isn't that all PVP is unfun. It's just that all those PVP survival games were poorly made, and thought out. Like I said before, PVP is either good or bad. There's no room for a middleground there. Of course a good PVP survival game could be made in the future, but the ones that exist now are all bad, Rust included.

I haven't even played a single one of those Open World PVP Survival games like Rust/Ark/DayZ. They consistently either get panned by critics or totally ignored. Modern games need to get 78 or higher on Opencritic for me to even bother with them. I own hundreds of games and am not going to add some popular, but subpar game to my backlog like that.

Rust's current scope is more or less a dead wasteland, still filled with the trimmings of an unpolished indie game, in the sea of all over open world PVP games.

Not sure what you'd call success when it's current state leaves something to be desired, at least compared to other games that had better turnarounds like NMS or hell, Minecraft, which had far better success. Even Valheim here has had quicker success than Rust.

Sounds like you don't like people stating what PVP is. I guess you support wars too?. Regardless, PVP is what it is, and there's no denying nor changing what it involves.

And games like Rust didn't dell like hotcakes? You got a weird logic. How about both can be successful If they are done how at least some million like it?

I never said anything about their sales.

Kudos to them for having the balls to make a crafting open world survival game fun, and not tedious as hell, like Rust/Ark/Conan.

Still insane that they've sold this many in less than a month. It took Fall guys some time, as well as Among us, to get their highest sales, but Valheim is doing 3m in up to 3 weeks.
