Here is an overview of the game:
Completely rebuilt using the best of modern gaming technology, Final Fantasy VII Remake is a reimagining of the iconic original game that re-defined the RPG genre. Along with unforgettable characters and a story revered as one of the most powerful within video games, the game also features a hybrid battle system that merges real-time action with strategic, command-based combat. The first game in the project is set in the eclectic and sprawling city of Midgar and presents a fully standalone gaming experience that goes deeper into the iconic characters and world than ever before.
Final Fantasy VII Remake draws players into a world where the Shinra Electric Power Company, a shadowy corporation, controls the planet’s very life force. Cloud Strife, a former member of Shinra’s elite SOLDIER unit now turned mercenary, lends his aid to an underground resistance group calling themselves Avalanche as they fight against Shinra’s oppressive force.
Final Fantasy VII Remake launched for PlayStation 4 worldwide on April 10.
We’d like to share a Midgar-sized THANK YOU to everyone who has supported #FinalFantasy VII Remake.

A partial remake of a 20+ year old game sold 5 million copies in a couple of months and people are calling this dissapointing. What a time to be alive!
Add FF13 sold 5 million units in 5 months (only 2 months in the US), when install base was only ~85 million across all platforms.
Install base of PS4 is sitting at 110 million right now, and it took 5 months to sell 5 million. Again, this is the remake of the most revered FF game of all time.your reply...
I think personally the sales are fine... but it's just that some people had vastly inflated expectations.
As JWeinCom says, I agree the sales are fine, good even. But I know I didn't buy it because of the nature of this 'remake', and other fans of FF(7) I know didn't buy it, and I'd consider FF7 one of my fav games ever. If you aren't interested in FF a remake of a classic one is the series might put you off and if you (like me) don't like the changes you will be as well. I expect FF16 to sell more when it arrives. The most telling of how well FF7Remake does is how well part 2 series compared to this. 13-2 sold less than half of 13.
I honestly thought it'd be more by now, had a HUGE launch.
Unfortunately a lot of games are very front loaded and don't sell well over time, especially JRPGs (not counting Pokemon).
It took FFXV over a year to ship 7m units on PlayStation + Xbox combined. FFVII has a chance to outperform it with stronger legs. (FFXV shipped 5m first day and then took over a year to ship another 2m, FFVII has already shipped an extra 1.5m since launch so clearly has better legs.)
congrats to square enix and ff7,
with all the corona virus and all
corona virus boost the sales of many games, not reducing
Congratulations FFVIIR, great game and breaking records.
Let's face it, guys. These are impressive numbers. I can only imagine what this would have potentially sold had it been the entire story line. No doubt it'd be more like closer to 8 million by now.
I'm sure the fact some of the changes and/or the fact it isn't the whole story impacted the sales. The fact a project like this was still able to do numbers on par with some of the biggest PlayStation exclusives is already a testament to the greatness of FFVII.
The fact the first part of midgar - as a game - is one of the best damn games I have played in recent memory speaks volumes to me. The story may not be perfect compared to original but man does it make up for it by far making the gameplay far more impressive than the original's. I'd say this is the greatest game I have played to date on any console after 2007.
Good sales overall plus I assume a lot of people are waiting for a PS5 version as well.
I'm just waiting for the inevitable PC port.
Weak sales considering the amount of marketing/hype it was getting...
compared to what? 5million is a lot :P
I wouldn't say weak but not really impressive compared to FFXV, which wasn't received nearly as well and released on a much lower userbase.
FFXV shipped 5m in 24 hours and 6m 2 months after release (holiday season).
FFVII Remake shipped 5m in 4 months.
@Ultr @Bandorr :
FF13 sold 5 million units in 5 months (only 2 months in the US), when install base was only ~85 million across all platforms.

@hoangnhatanh 5 million 4 months not 5. Nice try though
@bandorr the first part doesn't make sense it being the fifth best selling PS4 game ever.
@Pinkie_pie : So you think how much it will sell if you add one more month? Several dozens of thousands more?
@hoangnhatanh 4 months is 4 months. Actually it's less than 4 months so you saying 5 months just to make it look like a major disappointment. 5 million in 4 months isn't too good nor is it bad
@Pinkie_pie : change nothing, FFXV sold 6m in less than 2 months with a much smaller install base, compared to 5m in nearly 4 months for FF7R with 110mil install base
Install base means nothing when the system is at the end of its life. 4 months is 4 months so stop making shit up just to downplay a game you haven't played yet. Again 4 months not 5
@Pinkie_pie Yeah, in 4 months, FFXV already sold more than FFVIIR
@hoangnhatanh let's wait and see since ff7 remake isn't finished yet. Who knows how many people haven't bought the game yet because they are waiting for more parts or the full edition.
@Pinkie_pie you was one of the people who claimed FFVIIR will help ps4 sales reach`10mil in JP right?
@hoangnhatanh you were one of the people who claimed ff7 remake will only boost PS4 by 15k in Japan right? It did over 80k that week. PS4 permanent price drop to $200 = 10 million
Oh and btw I said ff7 remake will help PS4 reach 10 million not just ff7 remake and I think you already know that's what I said so stop with the bullshit
@Pinkie_pie yeah, and FFVIIR along other big games definitely would help PS4 sales reach 10mil, right? Have PS4 reached 10mil yet?
@hoangnhatanh I didn't say 10 million before end of 2020 or 2021 did I? I said lifetime so that means when PS4 ends production. I'm not wrong yet since it's still selling and there's still the permanent price drop to come. You were so wrong about ff7 remake would only help PS4 sell 15k lmao
@Pinkie_pie Because they can keep producing ps4 when ps5 come out during this covid pandemic, rofl
I think the sales are great for what is essentially an episode of a classic game.
I'd say ultimately it will finish with close to 10 million....now let's say, on avg, each game sold 10 million and had 3 parts. That's 30 million games bought which is 3X the profits of the original. This is a huge success! Plus, not to mention there are many purists who are not even bothering with it because of it not being a 1-1 remake.
Fine sales if taken as purely the number, though I'm also a bit underwhelmed by 'just' 5M shipped including digital considering the stature of this game (it's name at least) and the big opening, hype and marketing it had. Legs don't seem to be all that much for something this high profile. Of course, there can be many extra sales with a PS5 edition, and with a 'complete'-edition after all chapters are released.
Woooohooooooooooo great game; hoping for a PS5 patch :)
I think ffxv was overshipped, I remember seeing many copies everywhere and the game became really cheap very soon, also it wasn’t exclusive, I think those numbers are really good and square seems to be happy.
This is more than I was expecting, quite honestly.
It'll be nice and awkward though, when Part II sells just half of this figure or less.
People are probably holding out to the super king edition on ps5 as everyone remembers what they did with ffxv
Great for a 3rd Party (Timed) Exclusive release this gen.
Especially with Corona and game sales exploding I would have expected more because it is a great remake of one of the most beloved games ever released. 5m just on one platform is still good, though.
Weak sales great that's what they get for sucking PlayStation Everytime
Pretty poor for the so called best game ever. The old guard are irrelevant now, newer generations just want the next COD or Fifa.
Best selling full-priced demo of all time!! :D Honestly, that's fantastic considering that everyone knew this game wasn't 'complete'.
But FFXV was released on 3 platforms, FFVIIR is exclusive to PS4 currently.
FFXV had worse legs.... it shipped 5m first day and then took over a year to ship another 2m. 7m by January 2018. While also being released on multiple systems.
I mean but aren't 4th quarter launches always better regardless?
