by William D'Angelo , posted on 07 June 2020 / 1,937 ViewsSony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida during the recent corporate strategy meeting announced Sony plans to reveal PlayStation 5 games soon. He also discussed the audio capabilities of the PS5, saying it will work alongside the haptic feedback to provide "game experiences that were not possible before."
There are first and third-party games already in development that will take advantage of the new audio capabilities of the PS5.
"Sound is also an important part of immersion. By installing a customized 3D audio processing unit in PS5, we have made it possible to deliver diverse and sophisticated 3D audio experiences," said Yoshida. "Players can experience sound that moves from in front to behind, above to below and all around them.

"By combining speed, haptics and sound, we can further improve on the wonderful experience available on the PS4, making the PS5 a truly next generation console by providing game experiences that were not possible before."
The PlayStation 5 will launch in Holiday 2020.

One of the features I'm most excited about.
I'm curious to hear the difference between PS2 Dolby 5.1 and PS5 3D Audio.
Watch Cerny GDC video, he explains it there.
The 3D Positional Audio on the Playstation 5 and Dolby 5.1/7.1 are separate technologies for different purposes.
Dolby is an audio compression format that encodes 5.1 discrete channels of audio into a single bitstream.
Think of Dolby as the way the audio gets delivered to the speakers... Like how a GPU delivers an image to your display.
Think of the 3D positional Audio as the GPU rendering the 3D graphics and we start to think along the appropriate lines.
Don't be surprised if the Playstation 5's 3D positional Audio leverages Dolby.
This is one of the features that has me excited... Any PC gamer that used the Aureal A3D years ago will understand and appreciate how amazing this technology is going to be.
Isn't that just surround sound? Lol
No. This is 3D positional audio.
It renders the audio in a 3D space and will change sound bytes volume, reverberation and more, right down to how it even sounds due to sound reflecting off different material surfaces.
I.E. Sound bouncing off brick will sound different to metal.
We actually started to go down this path years ago with the Original Xbox and Aureal A3D, then the industry went backwards.
Surround sound is just playing the sound from multiple speakers around you without any real consideration of what is happening on your display.
