Halo 3 Serves One Billion Matches Worldwide - News

The last day of February 2009 was very kind to developer Bungie, as their Xbox 360 exclusive Halo 3 crossed a significant milestone few games have. Halo 3, released to a fanfare of unprecedented hype and razzle-dazzle in September 2007, has crossed the one billion online match on Saturday, February 28th. For those that prefer cold, hard numbers that's 1,000,000,000. That's also over 2,023,153,340,764 seconds in matchmaking playtime. For comparisons sake, the developer was kind enough to crunch the numbers and put things in perspective.
"If each game of Halo 3 lasted only three minutes and nineteen seconds, mirroring the Infection game outlined above, the total amount of time played would eclipse sixty-three centuries. For those looking for more granularity, that's roughly 630 decades, 6,300 years, or 2,300,000 days."
All too often when discussing the videogame industry we are mired in the sterile conversation of sales figures and fall victim to marketing hype, as though the conversation lives and dies at the retail counter alone. Its nice to see talk steered where it should be - in the gameplay. One billion games is a staggering amount, especially for a single title one a single platform, and certainly one that everyone at Bungie and Microsoft should be very proud of. Well played, Master Chief, well played indeed.

Amazing accomplishment for one of the best FPS ever.
I would say it deserves it. Not the best FPS this gen (I would give that honor to Killzone 2), but an excellent game in its own right, even if it doesn't quite live up to Combat Evolved.

one word : Halo 3
it has had awhile to build up to it, but its a great accomplishment. its been in what, at least the top 10 (20?) games to buy since its came out... its not much of a surprise i guess, but good job :)

That's 111 games per buyer, not that much in fact, I played 5000 games on Halo 2 and 900 on Halo 3...

A halo 3 "match" is when players log into Halo 3 and select "matchmaking" which randomly selects a team and a various of a gametype that you picked from the matchmaking menu.
For example there is Team Slayer matchmaking option which pits you and either 2 or 3 teammates against a team of equal skill. The objective normally is to kill the opposing team 50 times.
That is one example for a "match" There are various gametypes and differant matchmade options available, so the time a game take varies. Bungie give players 12 minutes to finish a team slayer match but the average time is normal 7 to 8 minutes.
These figures don't even take into account the millions of hours players spend in custom games, that number must be incredible as well.

Can someone tell me what a "match" represents?
Is a match on Halo 3 equivalent to 1 game with it?.... ie in 1 area with 1 "mission" (for instance a deathmatch might be set until everyone has died 5 times or something like that, or whichever team dies the least over a set time period)
I am just trying to figure this out into some proper playtime stats.
The number of seconds spent is a much nicer number... it is stating a total of 561 million hours have been spent in online matches. although that obviously doesn't include offline play, and I have no idea if it inludes the time spent in "rooms" before a match starts.
Still an impressive number.... it's an average of over 62 hours per owner of the game online.
Also what is the significance of the coloured part, why does an infection game last 3 minuted 19 seconds (if this is just about a specific game played that is not included in this article then I can disregard it)
