Welcome to the latest edition of the ‘PS4 vs Xbox One vs Wii U Japan’ article. This series compares the monthly and lifetime sales of the 8th generation of home consoles - the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Wii U.

Looking at the total sales of the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Wii U in in Japan for October we can clearly see how the Wii U started with a big lead over its competitors. The gap has slowly shrunk though, as the PlayStation 4 has outsold the Wii U most of the time since it launched.

The Wii U has sold 2.64 million units lifetime, the PlayStation 4 1.90 million units, and the Xbox One 59,804 units.

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 1,896,058

Xbox One Total Sales: 59,804

Wii U Total Sales: 2,644,931

The PlayStation 4 outsold the Wii U in October for a fourth straight month. The PlayStation 4 and Wii U have outsold the Xbox One every month since it launched in September 2014.

The PlayStation 4 outsold the Wii U by 57,576 units in the month of October and the Xbox One by 96,405 units. The Wii U outsold the Xbox One by 38,829.

When you compare monthly sales to a year ago the PlayStation 4 and Wii U are up and the Xbox One is down. The PlayStation 4 is up 63,215 units, the Wii U is up 22,462 units, and the Xbox One is down 1,412.

PlayStation 4 Monthly Sales: 98,415

Xbox One Monthly Sales: 2,010

The fact that the PS4 has been on the market this long and still trails the Wii-U is amazing for Nintendo. One of the few bright spots for a sagging console.

Ofc. PS4 will "eventually" win because the successor to the Wii U is almost out and the PS4 still has at least 3 good years of sales to go. When the NX comes out the Wii U will join the Xbox on the ground but the big question is how will the NX compete with the PS4.

So the PS4 will eventually win if the slopes remain consistent. And it wont take more than a year.

It's 700k behind Wii U, so I guess i'll take more than a year... unless the Wii U stop selling and PS4 get into beast mode.

It's more likely that it will happen in less than a year. The Wii U doesn't have to stop selling at all for this to occur. It's highly likely that next year the slope will become even steeper in favor of PS4. There's a tonne of Japanese games coming out next year on the console, so its sales will be up YOY pretty early. The Wii U's line-up, in comparison, is much smaller next year.

Even then, it's unlikely. If the Wii U sells more or less the same as this year ( probably ~750k-800k), Sony would need to sell at least 1.5 Million consoles next year to overtake the Wii U. This would mean 30k per week, but Sony only reaches those sales when really heavy hitters are released or during japanese holidays. So unless Wii U sells less than half a million consoles, I don't think they can pass Wii U next year.
