Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10. As a note all sales figures are retail only.
This week we will be looking at the top 10 selling games in 2010. Last week we looked at the top 10 selling games in October 2013 and the week before that the top 10 selling PSP games.
Looking at the top 10 bestselling games in 2010, one of the games was released in 2006, four were released in 2009, and five were released in 2010. The four games released in 2009 sold a combined 37.62 million units or 9.41 million units on average. The five games released in 2010 sold a combined 40.42 million units or 8.08 million units on average.
The top 10 bestselling games in 2010 have sold a combined 92.16 million units. This is more than the top 10 games sold in 2007 and 2009, and just below the top 10 games in 2008. The top games in 2007 sold a combined 66.76 million units. The top 10 games in 2008 sold a combined 94.67 million units. The top 10 games in 2009 sold a combined 91.53 million units.
Wii Sports is one of four games to sell more than 10 million units in 2010. The other three games are Wii Sports Resort, New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Call of Duty: Black Ops. The entire top 10 sold more than five million units.
There is one game that has two versions in the top 10, Call of Duty: Black Ops for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The two versions sold a combined 19.23 million units.
When you break the top 10 down by platform there are five Wii games, three Xbox 360 games, one PlayStation 3 game, and one DS game. The five Wii games sold a combined 51.92 million units or 56.3 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The three Xbox 360 titles sold a combined 24.8 million units or 26.9 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The one PlayStation 3 game sold 8.71 million units or 9.5 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The one DS game sold 6.73 million units or 7.3 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.
The top 10 selling games in 2010 as a graph shows how much Nintendo dominated the top of the charts. Six of the top 10 games are on a Nintendo platform. The six Nintendo games sold a combined 58.65 million units or 63.6 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.
Here are the sales figures outside the top 10: The top 13 games sold more than five million units and the top 38 games sold more than two million units. The top 87 games sold more than one million units and the top 230 games sold more than 500,000 units.
There was a total of 74.18 million consoles sold in 2010. The DS was the top selling platform for the 2010 year with 20.55 million units sold. The Wii was the second bestselling platform with 17.26 million units sold. There were also 13.75 million PlayStation 3’s sold, 13.25 million Xbox 360’s sold, and 9.36 million PSP’s sold.
For 2010 there was 623.57 million games sold. The Wii was the top platform with 180.65 million games. There were also 131.11 million games sold for the Xbox 360, 129.33 million games sold for the PlayStation 3, 120.32 million games sold for the DS, and 45.03 million games sold for the PSP.
