Civil War Amongst Anonymous Breaks Out; AnonOps Sites Hacked - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 10 May 2011 / 22,679 Views

The hacking group who attacked several Sony websites around a month ago and who are now accused of bringing down the PlayStation Network have gotten into a little bit of trouble. It seems that some sort of civil war has broken out amongst "AnonOps," a breakaway group from Anonymous, after a rogue admin going by the name "Ryan" hacked multiple AnonOps websites.

The result was quite a mess with a bit of profanity spread across the webpage, as well as a small comic strip poking fun of Anonymous. On top of that, the site is now littered with chat logs and IP addresses of members and the site has been renamed to "LOL ANONOPS DEAD." The "AnonOps Netstaff" was quick to update its users on the matter by posting a message on another one of their websites.

We regret to inform you today that our network has been compromised by a former IRC-operator and fellow helper named "Ryan". He decided that he didn't like the leaderless command structure that AnonOps Network Admins use. So he organised a coup d'etat, with his "friends" at skidsr.us . Using the networks service bot "Zalgo" he scavenged the IP's and passwords of all the network servers (including the hub) and then systematically aimed denial of service attacks at them (which is why the network has been unstable for the past week). Unfortunately he has control of the domain names AnonOps.ru (and possibly AnonOps.net, we don't know at this stage) so we are unable to continue using them.

The message then went on to warn any users trying to connect to one of AnonOps' IRC chats via the now comprimised site.

We would STRONGLY ADVISE all users to STAY AWAY from AnonOps.net and AnonOps.ru, and they should be considered COMPROMISED. Using or connecting to any service on those addresses may put your computer, and by extension your person, at risk.

"Ryan," according to the messages posted, was a network administrator for AnonOps. This news comes in just days after Sony discovered several files uploaded onto the PlayStation Network servers with Anonymous' slogan. Two days after the discovery, two veteran Anonymous members stated that the group was most likely behind the attack that took down the PlayStation Network on April 20.

@Tridrakious: Owwwww, maybe the third strike turned to be a 4th ball...
So now they are out?

I wonder if this was the "third attack" on Sony, but turned out to be an attack on Anonymous by Anonymous.

So the story goes. I wasn't there or a part of the group, so I'm not sure but I'm pretty sure that's the reason.

@Kayoss They where masks because when they went after The church of Scientology they would get identified by the church and persecuted. Some of the people of anonymous got attacked by the church.

If you play with fire, you might get burned. Which apparently is what Ryan did.

Since they're fighting amongst themselves, it'll probably only be a matter of time before the ones that didn't participate in the PSN hack rat out the ones that did.

@nanbanjim

"You guys don't know any Anons."

True, I don't know the exact people who did this. But considering their name and sense of 'justice', they most likely spawned from 4chan or a similar board. And I know how the majority of them act.

If they wanted to be separated from the avg. Internet pre-teen lashing out at society, they should have called themselves something else. I mean, how hard is it to come up with a name like 'Anti-Sony Defense Force' or 'SHN (Sony Hacking Network)'.

  • 0
kayoss (on 10 May 2011)

If Anonymous claim that what they are doing is justice why are they behind masks? The reason is because what they are doing is illegal. When we talk about Heroes we are not talking about comic book heroes hiding behind masks. But in the real world how many heroes hide behind masks? Look at our fire fighters, police officers, service men and women... do they hide behind masks? No because what they are doing are legal and justified!
Before you start ranting about what anonymous doing a noble thing you need to look again.

@Shadow)OS
yes, they did deserve it and they are getting a taste of their own medicine. and neither they nor anyone else should be surprised by this, rather it should have been completely expected considering the nature of their group and websites and what it is that they do.
i took a risk putting my personal information on PSN and when it was compromised i didn't cry and blame Sony. i covered my own ass and now i'm fine.
Anon played with fire, got burned, and either they know how to protect themselves and they'll be fine or they don't and they're screwed.
that's life, get used to it.

Look at them anonymous is evil PERIOD. Look at them with their evil mask and that evil smirk and that evil beard if you can't see it then it's pretty obvious your brain dead! But they do have a pink colored cheeks thou....

  • 0
mizzou_guy (on 10 May 2011)

@Shadow)OS:

Are you seriously trying to entice sympathy for a group of people having their personal info released . . . the same group of people who released personal info about Sony employees about a month ago and tried to go as far as to find information on their kids?

Also, as far as their punishment for what they have done - I don't give one iota. If it's illegal where they live and the punishment is severe, then they should have known better. Now that they're caught, they (nor you) should be pointing the finger at somebody else saying they got this group in trouble when in reality this group's actions is what is getting them into trouble.

"Those idiots deserved it"
"So is anonymous now "incompetent" because their security measures weren't good enough, and it's Anonymous' fault that "Ryan" hacked them"
"paybacks a bitch, Ryan must know what they are doing is fucked up, good for him"
"getting a taste of their own medicine."

^ Oh how did I miss the sarcasm in all of the above how silly of me. Almost every post under the article is rife with ignorance, not sarcasm.

As for the second point, you're correct. I forgot how how many kids go here who care only for their precious online service. I'm betting that at least half of them think that people cheating in online games and the people in the article are one and the same. You know, HACKERS OMG AIMBOT.

1) you're getting your panties really jacked up in a bunch over what you don't seem to realize is "sarcasm" in many of these posts.
2) trying to elicit sympathy on this site for anyone associated with Anonymous is foolish and a massive waste of time.

So anonymous is attaching a break away group anonops. So servival of the fitess at this point. This will not stop anonymous, just the break away group. I bet anonymous did not want to be hit with this, so they pulled the rug out under the feet of the people who did. Which would be anonops.

Good. Any hacker that performs an action that has a negative effect on an innocent bystander does deserve what they get. There is no argument against that. Also what people do with their time, once again, as long as it has no negative effect on others, is up to them and cant be commented on by anyone.

  • 0
Jordahn (on 10 May 2011)

I noticed that the typical anonymous supporters have yet to comment on this news article. As someone else put it, Honor Among Thieves?

  • 0
Shadow)OS (on 10 May 2011)

For the retards who are saying things like "they deserved it!" , "lolol look at ANON's security!", and other really ill-informed comments, here's the difference: Sony was hacked by external parties due to bad security measures. AnonOps was betrayed by a fellow member from the inside. Note I did not say that AnonOps was 'hacked' because they really weren't. The member had all the information from the get go and this has nothing to do with security practices.

Now if any of you twits did a little light reading, you'd find out Ryan isn't exactly an angel. Both sides of the fiasco have dirt on their hands, and only time will tell who's are dirtier... not that it really matters.

What is important about this, outside the gaming world, is that real identities of users - some involved in operations and some not - have been released by Ryan himself. He backstabbed the entire community. Not only that, but the IRC clients were a method used to protect the civil rights of people in other countries (Middle East comes to mind). Those details were compromised too. Personal details of civil rights supporters in incredibly conservative (and one may argue backward) countries that may impose physical harm in dissension.

Let that sink in.

The FBI will be knocking on doors and tracking people due to that leak. Lives and livelihood's in multiple countries are threatened due to the intentional leak.

BUT WHO CARES MY PSN IS DOWN AND MY CLEARLY VALUABLE AND PRODUCTIVE TIME IS BEING TAKEN AWAY FROM ME

  • 0
nanbanjim (on 10 May 2011)

You guys don't know Anons. Ryan's not someone seeking justice, he's doing it for petty personal revenge... just like everything Anonymous groups do. In large groups, Anons even out their pettiness and what remains is largely the good. As individuals, though... petty prats.

  • 0
kayoss (on 10 May 2011)

I can hear it now from Sony, " Anonymous is incompetent they were using outdated software and compromised all users that visit their site."

It seems what happened to Anonymous is similiar to what happened to Sony. Both was compromise, both got users personal info stolen, DDOS, and a note left behind by the hacker.
I have the feeling that the guy who hacked Sony also hacked Annoymous. Good luck Annonymous because you will need it. Sony has the money to fix their issues, you guys dont because thats the price you pay for being anonymous and de-centralized.
