Overview – As the holiday season is winding down hardware and software sales are down significantly (-39% to -58%) week on week for every platform. After two straight weeks of 3 platforms selling over 1 million units, none are over the 1 million mark this week. The Wii and DS are over 700,000, the Xbox 360 is over 600,000, the PlayStation 3 is over 500,000 and the PSP is over 300,000. As for milestones this week the DS passes 145 million units sold to date, the Wii passes 84 million, the Xbox 360 passes 51 million and the PlayStation 3 passes 46 million. The top two games sold over 500,000, the top 17 sold over 200,000 and the top 35 sold over 100,000.
Worldwide Hardware – Week on week sales have decreased across the board as the holiday season is ending. The Wii is this week’s top platform with sales of 734,000, a decrease of 1.03 million (-58%). The DS this week is the second bestselling platform and the bestselling handheld with sales of 717,000, a decrease of 985,000 (-58%). The Xbox 360 sold 648,000, a decrease of 609,000 (-48%). The PlayStation 3 is down 388,000 (-41%) with sales of 554,000. The PSP is down 221,000 (-39%) with sales of 346,000.
Year on year sales are up for the Xbox 360, even for the PlayStation 3 and down for every other platform. The Xbox 360 is up significantly with an increase of 337,000 (108%). The PlayStation 3 remains virtually tied compared to sales one week ago, up 4,000 (1%). The PSP has the smallest drop year on year, down 88,000 (-20%). Nintendo’s platforms have the biggest drop with the Wii down 174,000 (-19%) and the DS down 124,000 (-15%).
After almost ten weeks of continuous increased sales, there is a significant drop this week. Also the gap between all three home consoles has decreased from 822,000 to 180,000. The Wii has been in first for seven weeks, the Xbox 360 in second for seven weeks, and the PlayStation 3 in third for nine weeks. The Xbox 360 lead for two weeks November 6 and November 13 and the PlayStation 3 also lead for two weeks October 23 and October 30.
Worldwide Software – There are no debuts in the top 50 this week as overall software numbers decrease on average 50% for every platform.
Other games in the top 10 that are not debuts include Kinect Adventures! (X360) is at number one with sales of 832,000 as sales pass the 7 million mark. Wii Sports is at number two with sales of 619,000. Just Dance 2 (Wii) is at number three with sales of 454,000. New Super Mario Bros. Wii is at number four with sales of 377,000 as sales pass the 21 million mark. Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii) is at number five with sales of 377,000.
Call of Duty: Black Ops (X360) is at number six with sales of 354,000 as sales pass the 10 million mark. Wii Sports Resort is at number seven with sales of 353,000. Wii Fit Plus is at number eight with sales of 347,000. Call of Duty: Black Ops (PS3) is at number nine with sales of 324,000 as sales pass the 8 million mark. Mario Kart Wii rounds out the top 10 with sales of 303,000.
Week on week software totals are down across the board. The Wii drops a massive 9.56 million (-56%) to 7.60 million games sold and the DS drops 5.06 million (-57%) to 3.78 million. The PlayStation 3 drops 3.32 million (-47%) to 3.68 million and the PSP drops 1.33 million (-50%) to 1.32 million. The Xbox 360 drops 4.38 million (-46%) to 5.18 million.
Year on year software total are up for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PSP while the Wii and DS see decreases. The Xbox 360 has seen the greatest gain up 1.76 million (52%) followed by the PlayStation 3 which is up 774,000 (27%) and the PSP which is up 80,000 (7%). The Wii is down 153,000 (-2%) and the DS is down 888,000.
