Americas Preorder Charts - 25th Oct 09 - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 26 October 2009 / 12,538 Views

First a quick note on the preorder charts - this is something that VGChartz has been publishing for nearly 3 months now and in that time we have found that our preorder numbers generally end up about 10% too high when the more finalised week one figures for the games are produced. Since only two of the seven normal sources of data are able to provide us with preorder information, there are always going to be larger margins of error in this data, and this week we have made some adjustments to our methodology to hopefully make the data more accurate. As with all data on VGChartz though, this is just a guide - formed from a fairly small sample of data, and anybody using it should be aware that there are margins of error (+/-15% on each game would be reasonable). So since we've tweaked the scaling factors, all games have been adjusted down since last week - we feel these current totals are more representitive of the current preorder situation.

So on to the figures themselves, and a number of games set for release next week are posting some strong figures. Forza 3 preorders hit 180,000, which looks good for an opening week of 250-300,000. DJ Hero looks like having a solid opening - 150,000 preorders over all versions suggests an opening of over 200,000. Tekken 6 also looks good for 250-300,000, the PS3 version well ahead of the 360 version in preorders - a now common pattern for fighters.

The full top 40 can be seen below:

Left4Dead 2 should also see over 350,000 units on week one - in all it should be a very strong November for the industry.

MAG is doing well simply because fps games has a lot of fans

  • 0
pacman7 (on 31 October 2009)

Im really suprised that MAG is doing as well as it is. I have the beta, and to tell you the truth, its just another typical FPS game. Iv'e played it a few times and although it is abit fun i dont see anything special about it that would make people so excited for it that they would pre-order the game 13 weeks before its initial release.

im a 360 owner and i think it will probly be a tight race for GOTY. ive never played uncharted 2 but it looks amazing. COD 6 also looks good but i refuse to buy it(to simaler to WaW and COD 4) i think uncharted 2 will win goty. as far as the grafics go i give Unchartd 2 an edge. And story are you cidding me. Not 1 COD game has had a good story or even a decent story.

@Wolvklawz:

You don't need to say nothing more.
We just understand that you are a CoD Fanboy and We also understand that you NEVER played Uncharted.

And even being a CoD fanboy, don't be fool enough to think that the MW2 will reach the graphic level of Crysis (which is the only way to overcome the Uncharted 2), to prevent people laugh.

Next time, when you compare a good game with a Masterpiece, try to know what is a Masterpiece, to understand the level that a Masterpiece can achieve, otherwise you end up looking bad as now.

The truth is that the CoD series sells much because in number of fans is only surpassed by the best FPS of all time:

The one and only Masterpiece of FPS's: COUNTER STRIKE: SOURCE

You have to realise that one thing is to sell a lot, another different thing is be the best game of the year. CoD has a huge fan base and everybody knows that will sell a lot, whether it be a good game or not.

I have no doubt that it may be the best FPS of the year and who knows, it may be the best selling game of the year...but GOTY??

No way!!!!

MW2 has the same chance of being GOTY as FIFA10 (and FIFA 10 is the best sports game EVER).

Left 4 dead 2 is AWESOME GOT THE DEMO Its multiplayer is going to be the best of the year.

Wolvklawz (on 29 October 2009)

Wow at the uncharted 2 vs MW 2 discussion. Sorry but the facts are there are twice as many pre-orders on the 360 alone for MW2 than there are units sold for Uncharted 2. MW2 will break records and dominate the holiday season as the number 1 game. Yes it will win GOTY, yes its better than Uncharted 2. Not going to debate "my console is better than your console", its moot and opinionated. To answer your questions though.
Yes MW2 will have better graphics, better story and a better soundtrack. MW2 also has far more replay value. You can find it another "boring" sequel, but you can thank Activision for throwing one out every year. IW is like Blizzard, there games take time and they put heart into them. Regardless, to expect anything else to win GOTY is a stretch. The question is does it deserve it? That I can't answer until the 10th but I expect it does. IW went nuts with this one, it will take all of the number 1 spots from units sold, to most played on live and yes GOTY. Disagree or not, but thats the way it will go down.

expecting splinter cell to have 500k by release if not more. also expecting to see AvP on here next week because of how amazing the multiplayer looks.

  • 0
alera (on 28 October 2009)

Will uncharted 2 have more sales than mw 2 ? probably not even on the ps3. Will it sell more consoles ?

Obviously the answer to both is no. The truth hurts boys. Look at the pre order numbers its embarassing to be honest. Serious gammers simply dont take the ps3 seriously for the big online titles the poor quality of the PSN is a major factor in this.

  • 0
alera (on 28 October 2009)

70% of MW2 console sales opening week will be 360. SO almopst 3 quarters of the benefit is with the 360 for the biggest title of the year.

They are talking 4 million units week one in AMerica alone thats twice kz2 lifetime sales ! in week on in America !

Yes MW2 is on the ps3 - but its a port of the pc / 360 version with no proper party / lobby and chat system.....

Which is why everyone is buying it on the 360.

  • 0
huaxiong90 (on 28 October 2009)

@Baalzamon: At least do some research on wikipedia before asking such questions.

Anyways, I'll save you the trouble: MAG is being developed by Zipper Interactive. Zipper Interactive are Sony in-house developers. Therefore, there's no chance it will ever go to the Xbox 360.

@alera: And the fact is, Modern Warfare 2 is on PS3. So your point is moot. Haha, Uncharted 2 really hit a lot of nerves.

  • 0
gtcarro (on 28 October 2009)

@alera

Sony fanboys??? Why???
Do you knew that MW2 will be also launched on PS3? lol

Why do you spoke about Uncharted? It is some inferiority complex?

And you said that: "MW2 by far the biggest game this year".

Since you spoke of Uncharted:
Do you think that MW2 will have better graphics that Uncharted 2?
Do you think that MW2 will have better soundtrack that Uncharted 2?
Do you think that MW2 will have better story that Uncharted 2?

Do not deceive yourself, because these aspects the MW2 will not even go near...

MW2 will be more of it.
More of the same boring story of CoD:MW and more of the same lack of innovation.
Do not get me wrong. I liked CoD2 and CoD4, but a CoD series game year after year (like a sports game) is starting to annoy.

MW2 is FAN material, not GOTY material...

The truth is that just the fact you've talked about Uncharted ... already says a lot ...

  • 0
V-r0cK (on 28 October 2009)

@alera ....so you're saying MW2 on 360 will shift more console sales than the PS3 which they also have MW2, UC2, KZ2? ......um can you define a 'proper AAA franchise'? Seeing your account imma guess its a fake.

  • 0
alera (on 28 October 2009)

I love all the SOny fan boys on here.

MW2 by far the biggest game this year and 3 - 1 360 over ps3. You want a box mover this is it. Forget about Uncharted and Killzone this is a proper AAA franchise..

  • 0
gtcarro (on 28 October 2009)

@Baalzamon

MAG will be a FPS that will allow 256 players to play online simultaneously.

Finally is being developed a game that will revolutionize the FPS style.

I played the Beta and I was completely enveloped and from that moment I lost all interest I had in MW2.

  • 0
gtcarro (on 28 October 2009)

@CatFangs806

Killzone 2 in the first 6 months sold 2.000.000 copies in just one platform.

At this moment is still the best FPS of this gen, not only in the graphics and sound departement but also in the single player mode, phisics, climateric changes and the destructible scenerys.

For what I see MW2 is unlikely to achieve the technical level of Killzone 2, but preorders prove that the fans don't care. They just want to play the same always and always again, at least in America where they are completely addicted to this series, although CoD sequences are always the same thing.

Supercoop (on 28 October 2009)

@Baalzamon

Tom Clancy the brand isn't going 360 exclusive, so far its only splinter cell because of that franchise's history with microsoft, i'm sure any other tom clancy games will be multiplatform

  • 0
CatFangs806 (on 27 October 2009)

To the comment below,
Does every FPS have to be 360 exclusive? Why can't the PS3 owners have their own big name shooter?

Killzone didn't work out too good, but it looks like MAG, if it gets good scores and reviews, could become an AAA franchise.

  • 0
Baalzamon (on 27 October 2009)

Supercoop: i'll correct myself...obviously not everything, for if a console that costed the same had no exclusives, very few people would buy it...it still has halo, gears of war, fable, mass effect, Forza (now tom clancy apparently)etc. etc...when i said everybody starting to go ps3 exclusive, I was generalizing what usually happens with the playstation brand and is starting to happen with the ps3 as it "matures" (i don't know if this is the right word...but basically i mean that devs are finally figuring out how to use the complicated systems that playstation always persists on using vs the easier systems that the xbox has used for programming)...so basically, what I was referring to is that it is very hard to believe that tom clancy went from being multiplatform to exclusive on the 360 (it makes it more plausible when you figure in that the 360 has proven to be the fps system though...while the ps3 has proven to be the system for other games. Since the 360 is the fps...kinda surprises me that MAG is goin exclusive to ps3 tho...I wonder what that's all about...anybody know?

  • 0
Vashyo (on 27 October 2009)

Really shows which console has the fps-fans when looking at mw2

MAG is actually my first ever pre-order, the beta was more than enough to convince me to get it.

Yeah LETS NOT GET TOO HYPED for mag lol

  • 0
Baalzamon (on 27 October 2009)

There's quite a bit of interesting stuff in here:

  1. MW2 significantly higher for 360 (I expect this is because its mostly a multiplayer game and people wanna play it on live?)
  2. MAG=13 weeks until it is released and it is already at the #11 spot with >70,000 preorders and it also has the 7th biggest weekly change...very impressive
  3. Tom Clancy has very good numbers for being 19 weeks out (why did they exclusive to 360 when everybody is starting to go exclusive to ps3 now?)
  4. It's like 24 weeks (estimate) until God of War 3 comes out, already #25, but its weekly change was minimal...likely that the diehard fans preordered as soon as they could then nobody will until the release date is confirmed and gets closer.
  5. God of War: Collection hit 30k...with weekly change of 4800...pretty impressive considering its just a remake
  6. Not very impressive numbers for DJ Hero for Wii compared to HD systems...this surprises me a lot
  7. Gran Turismo 5 will be released in March like God of War 3, yet has much lower numbers...I would have expected them to be about the same...whatever happens, From now until March 2010 will be absolutely massive months for the ps3 and March 2010 is the most significant month so far for the ps3.
  8. Dante's Inferno better start advertising more, for it comes out before God of War 3 and Gran Turismo, yet is lower for preorders and for weekly change...after watching videos for this, it honestly looked like it could be comparable to God of War 3...pshhhh, did I just say that...comparable=amazing yet still slightly less fun

Square07 (on 26 October 2009)

I find these numbers hard to swallow- they're so high! I remember Zelda 64 receiving 250,000 pre-orders (in the US) back in 1998 and that was a record!! Thtse nos. are higher than Japanese pre-orders who have the longest history in large reservation numbers. (Result of the DraQue III riots in 1988)

  • 0
Procrastinato (on 26 October 2009)

SC: Conviction coming up fast. Not surprising I guess. As far as MAG pre-orders go, it appears that more people are paying attention to the gaming media who are in the beta, rather than RPG and kowen.

Where are the BioShock 2 numbers for the PS3, btw? Seems odd that they would show up for the X360, but not for PS3.

  • 0
postofficebuddy (on 26 October 2009)

As usual insane MW2 numbers. MAG preorders are crazy good. GT5 is doing surprisingly good considering it doesn't even have a slated release date yet (probably 22-24 weeks out).

binary solo (on 26 October 2009)

I'm a bit disappointed in the R&C final number. I'm hoping this isn't a pre-order type of game. Interesting to see Dante's appearing on the list for the first time under PS3.

Looks like GoW Collection will have a slow opening. Perhaps some people are saving all their GoW love until GoW III releases? Then again do we really have much of an idea of how much to expect from a re-released game?

What's the story with Bioshock 2? It's got pretty good numbers for the 360 but it's nowhere on the PS3. Is this a timed exclusive or is there some other reason it's not figuring in PS3 pre-orders?

  • 0
leatherhat (on 26 October 2009)

MAG is amazing, it would be crazy if it beat mass effect in the end.

I don't see what the fuss over Gran Turismo is, it will certainly out sell Forza in NA. If Forza releases at 300,000, that is only twice what prologue did on a MUCH higher install base. The full version of Gran Turismo will do at least 500,000 in NA first week. I guarantee it.

  • 0
GranTurismoHelperMax (on 26 October 2009)

MW2 will be a beast, I imagine that most who didn't preorder the game will just line up @ midnight launches or get it day 1.

I agree MAG is doing gr8, must better then mass effect 2 in my opinion.

AS for NSMB, i'm glad that this game will have a pretty good launch, but the legs are gonna be better. Either that or assassins creed, the next 3-4 weeks are gonna be a huge competition against MW2. Whether people will buy the other games, I think it'll be pretty interesting to see what MW2 does to those games.

  • 0

Great for NSMB again! One game thats surprising me is MAG though, very impressive.

Also resident evil showing that the brand name is still going strong on the Wii. Could well do 80-100k first week which is impressive for an on rails shooter by all means

WooW...MAG is doin great...it could even be possible that this is gonna be bigger than Killzone 2 and Sony got they big FPS in NA!

disappointed in Ratchet...but i doesnt expect more...very sad!

also kind of disapointed in GoW Collection...lets see it got 3 weeks but i dont think this will change rapidly!

  • 0

Dante's Inferno has more pre-orders on the PS3 because it's exactly God of War. Use your noggin' fellas.

  • 0

MAG is going be a big seller. At 1 million week is a possibility.
I wonder if people are talking alot about the beta which is stirring up more excitement.

  • 0
RPG (on 26 October 2009)

I have no idea why Nascar is so big in NA, I watch it sometimes on TV and cannot keep it on for more than 1 minute however all the seats seem to be full every single time! That said I found F1 very boring this year as well so my liking of motorsports might just be decreasing.

Gran Turismo is not the franchise it once was in NA or Japan so I don't any reason why it will outsell Forza 3......in NA. Nascar might do something however I just get the feeling that it and WRC will just be samples on disc when GT5 releases. Later on full modes release as DLC for £10 each or something like that. If a franchise could get away with that GT would be one of them.

It says 2 weeks for Silent Hill - from what I read Silent Hill release date has been moved and will not be before December? (December 8th according to Amazon and Best Buy, for what it's worth)

@jonn
is the PS3 controller better for hack and slash games?

"Ratchet and Clank preorder is a bit disappointing for this beloved series.

Hopefully it's not the last of the platformers. I get a bit tired of all FPS or TPS games coming out."

Indeed... I was expecting 100,000 :/.

I'm an EU beta tester for Sony and have been playing MAG for some time...........game is beyond terrible. I have no idea why the pre-order numbers are so high with so long to go. Personally I thought it was going to struggle passing 700k lifetime WW but that does not look to be the case.

Very good Forza 3 numbers and really does show that the franchise is showly but surely becoming one of the big boys. Going to wait until there is a confirmed NA and EU date for GT5 before I start worrying about pre-order numbers.

No doubt in my mind GT5 will be bigger than Forza 3 in EU and Japan however NA I personally think Forza is now the bigger franchise.

"Tekken 6 also looks good for 250-300,000, the PS3 version well ahead of the 360 version in preorders - a now common pattern for fighters."

I think MAG is going to surprise a lot of people.

I LOVE GIGGS (on 26 October 2009)

I think that CoD: MW2 will sell 2.5 million on X360 and 1.5 million on PS3 in the first week. No more than that

wow so MAG will be top 10 next week very interesting stuff i hope it does good it seems like the developers put a lot of time in it 128 vs 128 should be sick.

i think god of war III is doing good also with it being 5 months or so from release date people are already getting involved in it.

what is disapointing tho is ps3 not having bioshock 2 on this list

i know a lot of people who havent pre ordered R&C but are getting it due to the best buy promotion of buy 2 games get 1 free this week.

i hope splinter cell does good too seems like a awesome game.

Surprised that DA:O pre-orders for the PS3 didn't go up since the news that it's being released Nov. 3rd

It seems like a good thing Alpha Protocol was delayed.

Also Dante's Inferno has more pre-orders on PS3 than X360??

Interesting to see PS3's Dante's Inferno above the 360 version.

MAG is kinda stunning... already at #11 with 70k preorder, and still 3 months left. Could end up as the first real surprise hit on the PS3!

Not that good for Forza 3, R&C doing bad, nice preorders for MAG and Assassin's Creed, MW2 no comments.
