Matt Booty: New Xbox Games to Release on Xbox Family of Devices

Matt Booty: New Xbox Games to Release on Xbox Family of Devices - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 01 April 2020 / 3,927 Views

Head of Xbox Game Studios Matt Booty speaking with MCVUK in an interview revealed that Microsoft plans to release all of their games over the next two years on the Xbox Series X and the Xbox One.

"As our content comes out over the next year, two years, all of our games, sort of like PC, will play up and down that family of devices," said Booty. "We want to make sure that if someone invests in Xbox between now and [Series X] that they feel that they made a good investment and that we’re committed to them with content.

"Our approach is to pick one or two IP that we’re going to focus on and make sure that they’re there at the launch of the console, taking advantage of all the features. And for us that’s going to be Halo Infinite, which is a big opportunity.

"It’s the first time in over 15 years that we’ll have a Halo title launching in sync with a new console. And that team is definitely going to be doing things to take advantage of [Series X]."

Halo Infinite will launch for the Xbox Series X at launch, the Xbox One, and Windows PC.

This is gonna limit what their 1st party can do, with games.
How is a game thats developed to also run on a jaguar core, 1,3 Tflop base fat Xbox One, gonna be able to push the capabilities of the Xbox One series X ? It wont, this is gonna weigh it down. I bet next gen games from xbox side wont be as impressive as they could, because of this.

Doesn't seem to affect PC games which can run on even weaker hardware. MS isnt focus on Console sales but availability and services. The Xbox consoles exist to push memeberships. Its why we see games like Minecraft still on multiple devices. And the big reason why MS dont port all there games to PS, its because of PSN. It conflict with Live.

You might be right. But it also depends on the route MS goes with X1 ports. Its possible to create games that take advantage new specs making a scaled back port for inferior specs.

You mention the X1 only has 1.3TF, but that's the easiest aspect to scale a game back. Its kinda like comparing Switch's GPU with X1X. The Switch looks version looks much worse but can be functional.

The RAM and CPU disparity might be more significant. But look at Forza Horizon 2, the 360 had a solid port using an older engine.

Lastly, they only promised two years. That's a fraction of generation and we generally see much more impressive content beyond that.

It's the opposite of Sony strategy , Sony want all their PS4 gamers to immigrate immediately to PS5. Sony are doing traditional transition and a believer of generations between consoles and games. Microsoft arBoth company are trying different methode.

A traditional transition is not at all immediately though.

So much for any chance of being competitive with PS5

Some of the most impressive 8th gen games are functional on Switch. So I'm reluctant to assume the worst especially if X1 isn't the lead.

I think it's way too early to say that. MS can afford to throw massive resources at producing multiple versions, if they want to. So, they can work around it.

Will they do that? I dunno. But, it is certainly possible.

This is no different than any other generation. Why are people acting like it's a big deal?

No different? Most Xbox One 1st party exclusives from first 2 years didn't launch on the 360.
Ryse
Forza 5
Forza 6
Halo 5
Halo MCC
Killer Instinct
Ori
Sunset Overdrive

This isn't typical in the slightest. 3rd Party crossgen is common, 1st party crossgen is not.

You're right that it is more common with third-party games. But, if this only effects first party games for a couple of years, and it would really only be a factor for AA and AAA games anyway (since those are the games that typically make use of lots of "power's), we're probably looking at something like 5-7 games being affected. And, since first parties do usually make some cross gen games, the actual impact here may be 2-4 more games will be cross gen this time. I just don't see the big deal.

Sounds like booty talk

I predicted this. Also, we don't know what this really means. Consider it this way, was Forza Horizon 2 held back by the 360 version? Nope. Are PS4/X1 held back by Switch ports? Unlikely. Hence, they can treat 9th gen hardware as the lead and still support X1 in some capacity.

I think this gen is a bit different, though. Things like SSD, Ryzen CPU, Ray Tracing etc. should allow developers to take level design, ai, physics, lighting etc. to a whole new level. That's not really going to happen if their next gen games should also be able to run on a XBO.

Mr Puggsly Mr Puggsly (on 12 January 2020)

There are numerous PCs games taking advantage of ray tracing, but allow it to be disabled. Therefore 9th gen games can have it enabled, 8th gen games can have it disabled.

Taking advantage of SSD doesent mean an old HDD cant support a game. Espsically if the 8th gen version is designed to stream less data or just have longer load times. PCs are taking advantage of SSDs in games while HDDs have longer load times.

CPU and RAM disparities might be a bigger issue, but that's why optimization matters. However, great AI isnt inherently CPU demanding. Previous gens had big worlds with great AI using vastly inferior specs.

Lastly and I repeat, optimization matters. 8th gen games dont easily scale down for Switch, its not a simple port. They often get another studio to handle that job, they create less demanding assets, effects, change the enviornment, etc. Not unlike Forxa Horizon 2 and Rise of the Tomb Raider ports on 360.

If X1 is treated as the lead in AAA for 2021 or 2022, they can still make vast visual improvments intended for Series X. Gears 5 and Forza Horizon 3/4 for example look much better on PC. These can still be large scale ambitious games as well.

If games are designed to take advantage of Series X but will have X1 ports, then they may need to be scaled back for X1. I am not really concerned because I feel its still posibble to create ambitious games even on X1.

Is Hellblade 2 not releasing for at least 2 years, then? Cuz that would have to be a huge downgrade to get that running on XBO.

Developers would rather not, but good for people who will not be upgrading straight away.

Which developers?

  • +1
Angelus Random_Matt (on 10 January 2020)

Ya, I'd like to know, who are these developers who aren't trying to still cash in on the larger userbase of last gen consoles for a couple more years? Last time I checked, basically everyone makes crossgen games for a couple of years past new hardware launches.

Just look at this gen with games like Forza Horizon 2 and Tomb Raider which also released on the 360, didn't seem to affect the visusls on the X1.

Im looking into this no different how PC games are developed with basically high and low settings, 30 to 60 frames and 1080 to 4k pixels. Game scaling etc still works and doesnt affect newer games evolving even with low end PCs in mind.

Azzanation shikamaru317 (on 12 January 2020)

Because you have the option to play these games at there very best. If you are satisfied playing them on minimal hardware settings than go for it. For me, ill be playing games like Halo Infinite at there very best. Good luck trying to play that on a Switch or PS4/5.

That's the beauty of options, you don't have to go out and buy a brand new system for it, however if you want the best console experience than it wouldn't be rocket science that the SeXbox is the best way to play it, if you are a PC gamer and are willing to upgrade to achieve the best experience than that's also good. Players choice. In the end, Software and services is where the money is so it wont offend MS if you don't buy a new Xbox.

So what exactly is the issue here? Are worried games will be held back due to this? Halo Infinite looks incredible, just because its on X1 doesn't mean its the best way to play it.

Why buy a console with no exclusives? That's easy, you buy the consoles if the games are good.

If you rather have minimal experience with the newer games than go for it. If you want to experience games like Halo Infinite at there best than SeXbox or a high end PC will grant you that. For me, its easy, i want the best experience so i wont be playing it on base X1 hardware.

I didnt see people saying that. Also, depends what hardware os the lead.

Either way, they could still make great visuals designed for Series X even if X1 was the lead platform for a game.
