Pachter: PS5 and Project Scarlett Could be Priced at $399 - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 01 July 2019 / 4,338 Views

Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter in an interview with GamingBolt said the specs for the PlayStation 5 and Project Scarlett suggest the price for consoles will be $500 at launch. However, he believes Microsoft will announce a price of $399 and Sony not wanting to fall behind in sales will set the same price for the PlayStation 5.

"The specs suggest $500 or so," said Pachter. "But my bias is that Microsoft will announce $399 and Sony will follow suit."

Head of Xbox Phil Spencer during an E3 live stream said, "the price will be important" for Project Scarlett. "Clearly price is one of these things people want to know, and as we’re kind of watching the cost of the components that are coming in, things like tearups and other things, trying to figure out what that price is going to be next year."

Microsoft will launch Project Scarlett in Holiday 2020, while Sony has yet to announce a release window of the PlayStation 5.

I doubt it. Sony tried $600 with PS3 and it didn't go over well, and even $500 didn't work that well for XB1 X. They won't go higher than $500 imo, higher than $500 is suicide territory.

if Pachter predicted I would be alive tomorrow I'd write my will and spend my last night doing coke with as many hookers as I could find before my midnight demise.

I haven't heard from ol' Mikey in years. Back during the PSWii60 era he was about as well known of a figure as Reggie Fils-Aime. Every day had a new pearl of wisdom from him. They should have made a game starring Pachter.

they did make a game of him, it's called Guess who..... hasn't got a clue what he's talking about.

Xbox One X is currently priced at $499. How delusional you need to make this kind of predictions?

What ? in France you can find Xbox One X easily at 319$, the price never drop in US ?

crissindahouse (on 15 June 2019)

To be fair, XBO X is considered a premium product with a premium price (without being sold at a loss) and you get it already for 350 pretty often. Even the official price drops to 399 from time to time.

Next consoles will be sold at a loss to get a good market share and they are still almost 1,5 years away.

Not sure what the price will be but XBO X is a really different situation

Less likely if these tariffs don't end soon.

HylianSwordsman (on 14 June 2019)

Well fuck, guess we're in for some $600 consoles now. Fuck you, Pachter.

Azzanation (on 14 June 2019)

What if there are variety of priced consoles at launch like a low end to high end models? These predictions might only make sense if its been confirmed if there is only one choice to start with.

I don't see how Scarlett possibly sells for under $500.

They also could not.

We have all seen numerous articles and rumours about the soon arrival of the PS5. The tension is building and the next generation will be so life like that reality and virtual reality will diminish. Most of us on here live and breathe console wars and we look forward to the start of the next console sales wars. The tension and excitement is building and we look forward to the 4k or 8k HD console to emerge. Console is a like a sports team. You loyally support your console of your choice and you defend it it like it is a God. We have no idea when the PS5 but its arrival will send sales through the roof and the graphics of games should be a giant leap over the PS4.

chapset (on 15 June 2019)

It ''COULD'' also be 299$ or 199$, it ''COULD'' be a lot of things

He will be right after price cuts.

ThatDreamcastTho (on 14 June 2019)

He's wrong. Mark my words $499.

Shadow1980 (on 14 June 2019)

What's Pachter's success rate for predicting things that weren't so obvious an idiot could have guessed them? I mean, this is the guy who thought the Wii was going to fail and that the PS3 would dominate last gen because of Blu-ray. The PS5 and Scarlett both sound like they're going to be beasts spec-wise, which suggests $500. I think the market is ready for such a launch price if the specs are worth it. $400 would be nice, but will likely result in the systems being sold at a loss. Also, there's no telling what Drumpf's attempts at a trade war will do in regards to imported electronics.

LuccaCardoso1 (on 14 June 2019)

Yeah, because Pachter is always so accurate...

Evilms (on 14 June 2019)

loooooooooooooooooool

Random_Matt (on 14 June 2019)

Well, the specs being predicted by fanatics have been debunked, so may be right.

DialgaMarine (on 14 June 2019)

I could be being too optimistic, but I think that is why Sony is steadily rolling out more price bumps for Plus; to keep subscription revenue high and hardware costs low as a result. I just hope those stupid tariffs don't do a lot of damage.

Jranation (on 14 June 2019)

Has he ever been right?

COKTOE (on 14 June 2019)

No. He has on multiple occasions, given Hitler credit for building the autobahn, which I too once thought was correct, mostly based on old Marge Schott interviews. But even that turned out to be incorrect. He's basically useless.

"Last year he predicted switch will be the best selling system in the US in 2019" So predict the most obvious outcome, huh? Well done, congratulation

StriderKiwi (on 14 June 2019)

$400 to $500 is my guess. Scarlet will be $500 while the budget Xbox (possibly disc-less) priced at $400.
