Rocket League Sales Top 10.5 Million Units

Rocket League Sales Top 10.5 Million Units - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 10 March 2017 / 12,381 Views

Psyonix VP Jeremy Dunham told Kinda Funny Games that Rocket League has now sold 10.5 million units.

One fourth of the 29 million registered players played the game in February. The playerbase continues to grow. This figure includes the free copies given to PlayStation Plus subscribers in July 2015

"Why would we want to take this huge community that we've already built, that's still growing, and say, 'What you're playing now is going to be irrelevant in 12 months, but we want you to stop what you're doing, giving us money all over again, and move over to this other game,'" said Dunham. "That's not the right way to do things. I think that era of games has passed."

"Our goal was to keep making Rocket League better and better so that we don't lose any of the people that want to play. If they're playing our game, we're not going to penalize them and make them buy our game again just because we want to add a couple new features. We want to let them know we're in it for the long haul, if they're in it for the long haul."

The development team is looking at new features that it can add to the game over the next year or two.

10.5 million with PS Plus users would be pretty low. I read other sources and they make it sound like 10.5 million is indeed the sales number, not including PS Plus users.
They are however included within that 29 million registered players.

I thought during the PS+ "free" month the number of PS+ downloads was about 5 million. After that free month the rest was all ordinary sales. If my memory is right then actual game sales tops out at about 15 million, which is great. There will of course be a lot of multiple users on consoles as registered players who are using a single purchased copy. (Like 3 of the accounts on my PS4 have been used to play Rocket League (PS+ download.)) So ~14 million users that do not represent a sale?

Pretty much. Rocket League had two free weekends on Xbox Live. I'm sure that alone added a few millions.

It's an excellent party game that I have on both my PC (4K Glory) and Xbox One. If they'd bring it out on the Switch, I'd triple dip....

This game deserves it's success. On a personal note, it's the 1st competitive online game I've gotten into in years. More of a co-op player these days. This one hooked me though. Breathing under waterrrr......UNDERWATER. :)

Tightwads are still only ponying up $50K for the Pro series world championship winners. They should move up to at least the $100K club for the world champion winning team.

OTOH, they do have 2 world championships each year, so if the same team wins both then they will earn $100K.
