Report: NX is a Handheld with Detachable Controllers, Uses Cartridges - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 26 July 2016 / 21,380 Views

Nintendo's upcoming console, the NX, will be a handheld with detachable controllers, according to multiple sources that spoke with Eurogamer.

The NX will be a powerful handheld console with its own built-in display. On either side are two controller sections that can be attached or detached.

The NX will also be able to hook up to your TV, so you can game on the big screen. A dock station will be used to connect the NX to your TV.

Nintendo has also decided to use game cartridges as the physical media for the NX, according to the sources. Nintendo is aiming to use 32GB cartridges, which would not be large enough to fit some modern games.

Digital downloads will also be available. Nintendo originally considered using digital downloads only and no physical media, but decided against it.

One source claims the hardware is radically different from the Wii  and the NX would not support backwards compatibility. Another source claims it will run on a new OS from Nintendo.

The NX will use Nvidia's mobile processor Tegra. Nintendo is not aiming to achieve graphical parity with its rivals, Microsoft and Sony. Nintendo is working to squeeze all of the technology in a handheld.

Another source stated Nintendo recently moved a gear within the planning of the NX ahead of the expected September unveiling. Nintendo is planning on making the marketing message simple after the confusing Wii U launch.

This sounds really exciting and compelling. I hope Nintendo finds huge success with the NX as they're a major contributor to the dedicated console industry and the gaming industry overall. I think all of their past lessons will culminate in a highly focused experience that'll be close to impossible to ignore as a gamer. I'm hyped about a Nintendo product in a way I haven't been in many, many years :D

If that's true, using the ARM architecture would potentially mean 3DS BC

If that's what it is, i'm not sure if it'll get me back to being a Nintendo console owner. I'll hold my final judgement, until i see more about it and how it works in real time, though.

That unified library though. All home console and handheld Nintendo exclusives on a single device with potential 3rd party support from both former home console and handheld developers. Personally, I think that's very compelling. Now I just need an announcement of a fully fledged 3D Pokémon Adventure and PlayStation may be dethroned regarding attention in my house XD

Odd title, Report... on rumours. It's still all just 2nd hand rumours from sources, will wait to see what Nintendo have to report.

Hopefully true, would be great if ot was (that is, if they can get enough battery life out of it).

It'd be cool if those detached controllers can attach to each other in some way to form a regular controller for when it becomes a home console when docking.

Yeah I can see that happening. Personally I'd prefer to have an unlimited amount of connections so my controller can be 8 feet long and have 56 buttons. I'll never lose at Smash again! /s

I hope so too, the controller would be a bit awkward if it were just 2 flat rectangles. But I feel it'd be hassle if those were the controller, like what if you lost one half of the controller or one half of it breaks. Would they have each of the controllers sold separately or always bundled as a whole etc...All these questions I wish Nintendo would just reveal it already xD

I like this idea, hopefully it can be considerably more powerful than Wii U like this.

What a huge dissappointment.

I guess it's no Zelda for Slimebeast then.

Looks interesting, a portable console that can plug into your TV. If it's a good price than im sold.

I hope Nintendo has a very good plan to stop third party developers from porting all of their mobile games to the platform, the price will determine the success of this if its true.

Who are all these different sources!?

It is very cool, but I fail to see how it is something that Nintendo must hide, I do not see Sony or MS trying to copy this.

Hmmm...I don't know about all this. I know Nintendo is really successful in the handheld market but, what is wrong with just making a console again? I mean, even the WiiU was practically a handheld.

I like the concept, But I wish it would be at least on par to the PS4. It's just a rumor for now I suppose...

Nintendo would make more success as a third party. But if they must launch their own console going ARM handheld/console with a power close to the Wii-u would be the next best thing. They don't increase the cost of developing games, and have the best mobile gaming solution on the go, and also being a great carry on party console. I would buy if they remasters old games to it and have a good launch lineup.

... so you would have three batteries to worry about if the "controllers" detach .... sorry not excited by this rumor
