Miyamoto Worried About Imitators If It Shows NX Too Early

Miyamoto Worried About Imitators If It Shows NX Too Early - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 29 June 2016 / 15,804 Views

Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto during a Q&A session with investors explained why Nintendo did not reveal its upcoming console, the NX, at E3 earlier this month.

Nintendo is worried about imitators copying them if they were to release information on it too soon.

Ubisoft stated earlier this month the NX would recapture a lot of the Wii audience lost with the Wii U.

The NX has a release window of March 2017.

Nintendo has said this before but it was in reference to software or the Wii, so only one hardware reference. This is another one related to hardware so this can either go really bad or really good. I'm really surprised that they haven't at least announced a reveal date. They year is halfway over...

it's rather worrying that whatever "gimmick" the console has is thought to be something which can be copied onto the existing x1 and ps4 in a matter of months since the NX is due to release in 9 months time, if this is the case can we expect that gimmick to be in place on the rival systems 1 year after the NX would launch if it is as successful as they think it is that people would jump onto right away?

it probably sucks

Chasesdaddy84 Ganoncrotch (on 29 June 2016)

Yea its definitely not going to be anything mind blowing. I'm leaning towards it being another gimmick that no one really cares about but Nintendo thinks is gold. They struck gold with the Wii and now they think every idea after will follow suit.. and that's just not the case.

umm its not that. The second nintendo showed it at e3 xbox and sony would begin development of copy. then in 1.5 years they will release it while the nx will be out already but only have a 6 month head start. So nintendo wants them to finish their own basic ideas and spend the cash on that first before they send them back to the drawing board.

I'd be honest FallingTitan, I really don't think the Playstation marketing team are super worried about the NX as of right now, even if it ends up being another Wii, did that really pull gamers away from the PS3 at the time? I think the X1 and Scorpio is what has Sony execs losing sleep right now, the NX could be phenomenal, but like I said as of right now I don't see it costing Sony sleep.

barneystinson69 (on 29 June 2016)

They're less than 9 months from release, and we don't even have an official name! I find that worrying, though hopefully I am wrong and the NX turns out to be great.

  • +11

I heard from other interviews with Miyamoto that he is still working on new idea on the NX and that is partially why they haven't announced anything yet. It's likely that they have the console 95% done at this point but are finishing up fine details.

The Imitators will come nonetheless.

yes like the wii mote and analog controlls they all copied nintendo but it took them LONG. Nintendo is delaying the inevitable as the only innovators in the gaming world its hard on them.

Its probably some PR shit to cover the time they need to make games for the system.

Sony and Microsoft did try to copy the Wiimote eventually with their own motion controls. One could say Sony did the most copying by putting a giant anal bead at the end of a Wiimote and calling it the Playstation Move.

You mean the eyetoy 2.0? Sure though, Nintendo invented waving your hands in front of the TV and I certainly didn't use it to box/clean windows/play volleyball back on the PS2

  • +7
Dyllyo sethnintendo (on 29 June 2016)

Say what you will, but the Move controllers are MUCH higher quality than the Wiimote

  • -3
sethnintendo sethnintendo (on 29 June 2016)

@Ganoncrotch, sure they had the eyetoy but Sony seemed to treat it like a second rate peripheral. They didn't support it that much and according to Wiki they sold about 10M units as of 2008 (can't find more recent sales). The games list doesn't look that impressive of games designed and games enhanced by the eyetoy either. Perhaps they should have bundled it more with the PS2 and PS3.

Well I was using this PS2 motion controller before the Wii came out. It may be a 3rd party controller and only works for one game, but PS2 did have a motion controller before the Wii. The Wii just revolved their entire gen around motion controllers. https://gamingkick.files.wordpress.com/2012/11/ps2-onimusha-3-katana-contr-_box.jpg

The eyetoy invented waving your hands in front of the TV, the wiimotes involve no such thing.

And the same can be said about motion gaming in the 2000s w/ the Playstation Eye Toy... I think that came out in like 2004 or something.

Kinect is nothing like the Wii mote. Sony did imitate the Wiimote big time like they always have in the past.

Yeah, Sony and M$ were sure in a hurry to add an expensive, unnecessary tablet to the PS4 and X1 controllers after the Wii U was unveiled...

If the Wii U had been successful I bet they would have.

  • +2
Ganoncrotch NightDragon83 (on 29 June 2016)

you can get pretty much the whole wii-u experience of the tablet on the ps4 if you have a Vita, remote play on that works up to a room away fantastically well. Love playing driveclub and street fighter online from in bed on the Vita.

  • -1
ktay95 NightDragon83 (on 29 June 2016)

Eh WiiU Gampad has a lot less latency than A Tablet and PS4 does sadly. Otherwise I would play my PS4 all the time

  • +4
Ganoncrotch NightDragon83 (on 29 June 2016)

not sure about a tablet Ktay but if you use a wired connection from the ps4 to your router instead of the wireless to that, the Vita gets a massive decrease in latency by doing that for remote play, could give it a try?

  • +4
Chasesdaddy84 NightDragon83 (on 29 June 2016)

My son is constantly playing his PS4 games on his VIta since I like to have the TV most of the time. I do as well. Where is this lag you speak of? It is super smooth and I'm still awe struck at seeing PS4 graphics on the Vita wirelessly. Clearly you've had little to no experience with Remote Play Vita/PS4.

  • -1
AlfredoTurkey NightDragon83 (on 29 June 2016)

Yeah, how about that PS Move and Kinect?

  • +5
Ganoncrotch NightDragon83 (on 29 June 2016)

@Chasesdaddy84 if you use the PS4 wireless's to the internet, and the Vita to connect to that the wireless card in the ps4 can take a bit of a beating from handling the connection to both at the same time, say if I play Street Fighter 4 online but remotely on the Vita it tends to mess up a bit, but if you use a wire to connect the ps4 to the net then it free's up the wireless card on the ps4 to fully just link to the Vita, makes it so much better. Just try it Ktay, you'll be amazed :)

Nintendo never withheld the Wii U's idea before launch. Everyone knew about it for over a year before launch. They didn't seem to mind then, so they seem to have a bit more confidence in this idea.

That's a fair worry I suppose. A lot of what Sony and Microsoft have announced over the last few years seems to be highly if not completely reactionary to eachother.

very smart of nintendo! if this new way to play is a HIT. the other 2 will try to get another peripherial or console out right after thiri neo and scorpio release or it will delay those 2 a year.

  • +4

Nintendo should keep it a secret till release day, then Nintendo should go talk to third party devs about getting games on it. ;)

lasershow (on 30 June 2016)

I don't understand why this is news. Iwata had stated before that one of the Wii U's failings was that it was revealed to early , and that they wouldn't do the same thing to allow copying of ideas for their next ideas.

Limited as it was, it still came long before the Wii U. ^_-

  • -2

You mean how MS ripped off the Wii's marketing while copying the EyeToy with Kinect? MS is the only company in the industry who has not done anything original. The idea of Live was copied from the Dreamcast.

Jay-Flash (on 30 June 2016)

This whole "who copied from who thing" is stupid. Nintendo copied the idea for Mario from the side-scrolling Pac-Man, which made them what they are today. Nintendo was copying Sega's CD add-on idea, which birthed the PlayStation. Sega had an analog controller first, then Nintendo released the N64 with an analog. Nintendo copied the dualshock as did Microsoft with the GameCube, Nintendo added a DVD player after the PS2 had one, Nintendo copied the EyeToy idea and games from the PS2 and the WiiMote from Sony and Sega who both had motion controller prototypes the generation before (look it up). Nintendo copied 3D gaming crom the PS3 and the second screen idea from Sony's PSVita. Sony also had cards that you could scan using the Vita, similar to the Amiibos that the WiiU uses. Now your gaming copying lesson is over kids.

  • -5
globalisateur (on 30 June 2016)

If it's the rumored screen on the controller. He can rest assured. Nobody will want to add a screen on a controller used for a home console with a TV.

Sony also didn't have any controllers in gaming until dec of 94 they came a long way pretty fast to come up with the first dualshock in 96 which was pretty much the standard shape of controller until the ps4 changed it a bit.

  • +2
pokoko CaptainExplosion (on 29 June 2016)

You are aware that Sony released a dual analog flight stick controller BEFORE the N64 controller was released, right? Technology which would be used with the Sony Dual Analog Controller, right? Your claim is absolutely false.
