More Sources Claim PlayStation 4.5 is Real - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 24 March 2016 / 9,376 Views

Last week a report from Kotaku claimed that Sony was working on an updated version of the PlayStation 4.

It includes an improved GPU that will be used for 4K support and better processing power that will push the console into the virtual reality market.

Eurogamer is now reporting it has "independently established" the updated PlayStation 4 and that Sony's R&D labs have prototype devices. There is more than one source that referred to it as the PlayStation 4K.

"Everything we've heard positions PlayStation 4K as a machine capable of playing current and next-generation ultra HD media, while also offering support for other aspects of the 4K spec, such as high-dynamic range and a wider colour gamut - aspects of the 4K spec that could be introduced to gaming," states Eurogamer. "However, in terms of additional computational power, we've got be realistic about what Sony can deliver with a mid-generation refresh.

"We can say that with some degree of certainty because PlayStation 4K will almost certainly use an evolved version of the APU technology used in the current console. Once again we will see semi-custom versions of AMD's CPU and GPU technology integrated into a single, console-friendly processor, and thanks to the firm's openness with its technology roadmaps, we have a good idea of the base building blocks Sony has access to in building its next PlayStation.

"We also know about the fabrication technologies available. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One arrived when 28nm microprocessors were firmly established, and right now the industry is moving on to 14nm and 16nm chips using 3D 'FinFET' transistors. Shrinking transistors and innovative new architecture are what make generational leaps in computational power possible.

"Knowledge of both of these areas, along with the idea that the device has to fit into a console form-factor, not to mention the compatibility required with the existing PlayStation 4, narrows the amount of options Sony has available significantly."

Just stop it with rumors and "sources claim...", we need official infos.

Indeed, my thought was "is the source Sony?, nope, okay"

So. PS4, PS4.5, PSVR. I honestly don't think we need another PS4. The original one is doing just fine. Releasing the 4.5 would probably kill momentum for the 4 or it'll backfire on the 4.5. Unlike Sony, Nintendo's Wii U isn't doing well which is why NX is releasing mid-late generation. Don't jump the gun Sony. PS4 is selling faster than the PS2, take it and leave it.

Except it seems like this PS4K is just a PS4 for playing games in 4K and a 4K Bluray player.

Has to be a very good GPU and expensive console to achieve 4k. The cost of running 4k on PC your looking atleast 1.5k-2k.

My guess is they will put HDMI 2.0 in it, and up the graphics so it can handle VR better and 4K will be for video and really basic indie type games. Like you said a AAA (COD, etc...) game in 4K takes a lot of power.

Good thing I have held off.

If this is true, I hope there is an option to upgrade current consoles throgh an add-on device or a discount when buying the new console. Can't really see an add-on working though if the chipset is changed. Hopefully this upgrade will be more media related and not effect the games too much.

Yeah you're probably right. Will have wait for an announcement before I start saving.

Exactly what I'm hoping. It would be screwed up if they expected us to shell out another $400. Really hope there is some sort of way to upgrade instead.

There can't really be a add on that will fix this, even in the PC arena external graphic cards are only now starting to come out. So it will be years before a console can do something like that (and it defeats the purpose of a console imo).

My guess is they expect you to upgrade every few years unless your super hardcore and have to have the latest model. Think iPhone. Most people don't upgrade their iPhone every year, but every few years. This is what they probably are expecting most to do.

this article is just daft, neither sony or microsoft will release a newer version of their current console with features that are currently unavailable on existing hardware, the original xb360 didn't have hdmi yet microsoft managed to add it later on while sony updated the hdmi spec through a firmware update, the shrinking of the apu die from 28nm to 16/12nm will be to make the consoles more efficient enabling them to make slim versions, the actual spec's won't change such as the processor/gpu speed/bandwidth and memory type.

why would sony alienate its ps4 instal base with a new console with features that won't work on existing hardware that just doesn't make any logical sense!

If they do this, it better have hdmi 2.0 . :P

Still skeptical that it's much more than an hdmi 2.0 slim model. We'll have to wait and see.

If consoles move to a 2-3 year upgrade cycle, then I'm out.

Sony released the PS3 slim 3 years after launching the original PS3. Sony released the PS4 in 2013, about 3 years ago.

PS4K Slim coming this fall!

Doesn't surprise me one bit. I fully expect every few years they (MS, SONY) will release iteration consoles from now on. All games will be BC with the previous gen (up to a point). I expect consoles will take the iPhone route of releasing updates and supporting the older ones for a time from here on out. I doubt we'll ever see a PS5 or X2, or if they do release they will be just slightly bigger iterations and a continuation of these consoles rather than a whole new big jump like in the past. Technology is just moving too fast not to do this. This also allows them to sell the current console at a premium price while still lower the costs of the older models. I suspect most games will auto detect what model you have and scale the graphics appropriately. It will be very few games that will only support the latest model for some time (I suspect 2-3 iterations like this before devs leave the launch model behind).

It's more and more I made the right choice in holding off on buying a PS4.

Zkuq LivingMetal (on 24 March 2016)

Same here. I didn't really expect this though. Instead, I just didn't find the games interesting enough (yet). But with this potentially coming out, there's a chance I would be quite unhappy if I had got the original PS4.

This would be a huge slap in the gave for early adopters. I got mine at launch. It better be an add on or trade in worth a 75 ot 80% discount, otherwise I'm through worth them.

Why.. ? You will still be able to play the older games.. just not at the better resolutions/fps.. This is how it works in the PC world and has for decades..

Good news, everyone complaining should blame him/herself. It were the same people saying consoles are too weak, PC is the best that let Sony to decide to do this, and now you are complaining? Next year the PS4 will be 4 years old, thats 1 year less of a regular console circle, so to release a stronger version i really dont see the deal while people switched from PS1 to PS2 during similiar time frames.

No, they don't, and the PS4, is 2 Years and 4 Months old, not over 4 Years, will only make 4 Years on November 2017, Playstation 1, had 5 Years of Full Life, before the PS2 Came out.
