Microsoft: Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Designed to Target Xbox 360 Owners - News

Microsoft is targeting Xbox 360 owners who have not upgraded to the latest generation of consoles with the announcement of Xbox One backwards compatibility.

Microsoft Corporate VP and CMO Mike Nichols told MCVUK the following:

"If you are an Xbox 360 customer, we just put our best foot forward about why now is a good time to upgrade to Xbox One.

Between the games you own ultimately being able to work on the new system, and the exclusives line-up we have, as well as the third-party games where we have some exclusive offers there...if you take the totality of it, that’s why we said this is the best games line-up in Xbox history. Those things, combined with the permanent price drop to £299, means that now is a good time to move across.

As a marketing guy I was worried that maybe there was a bit too much hyperbole when we were saying this was the greatest games line-up in Xbox history. But we certainly will deliver on the claim. In fact, if you think about everything we are doing, perhaps we are underselling, especially when you take into account some of the third party games we didn’t show on stage at E3. It might be the best games line-up for a console ever."

For anyone with some Xbox 360 games they still want to play this is a great bonus. Plus the way you can switch instantly, and record, etc. work better on the Xbox One. It just another bonus.

Another push that will get 360 owners to upgrade is the X1 Halo limited edition console which they will announced at Gamescom(and next year the Gears 4 edition).

Makes sense. Only people it appeals to are 360 owners really. I appreciate BC and hope most of the games I have end up making the cut. Would love to cut down on my backlog on 360.

They said the same thing with 360, but they never bothered to make X-men Legends I & II compatible. So i'd like to see the final list of what will work before making a purchase decision. Not to mention the Xbone better have a more reliable disc tray/drive than the 360. I had to replace it twice and this third one eventually developed the same "open tray" error too!!!

You want me back MS? You're going to have to justify it with some quality hardware this time. (at least the game lineup is finally starting to look better)

This is true. XB1 owners either still have their 360 or don't anymore and have no more 360 games.

You think you'd target 360 owners with X1 games, not stuff they already have.

This is typical from Microsoft. They hurridly abandon bc with x1, then realise they need it to 'target' 360 owners so do a u turn. Pathetic! At least Nintendo don't even have second thoughts on whether it should be a standard feature every gen.

It's a very cool gesture but as a 360 owner who went PC, I think I'll still wait before making the plunge. I want to know what all games it will be BC with. My 360 collection is over 120 games in total, I'd like to still have access to them all.

As long as the developers give the permission, they will port most of them.
