People overestimate the "Wii decline"... the famous decline was in 2011, and still, the Wii sales in 2011 was not so poor as some people think... (nearly 12m)... PS4 will barely sell more than the Wii in the last year, but will not close the gigant gap that the Wii is destiny to make...

Wii > PS4 lifetime

PS4 is still at the bottom of the hill. They will only begin to pick up as the years go on. It's already up YoY this year, despite having a stellar first year. Plus, PS4 will have a much longer lifetime on the market than Wii did.

No.
The Wii will have a equal life with PS4, that's even with the PlayStation legs.
Simple, this generation will be more short than the 7 generation, PS5 will not released in 2020, more realistic 2019, and after that, PS4 is not gonna to sell like PS2 after PS3, more realistic like PS3 after PS4...

I disagree, though both of our conclusions could be drawn as brand bias. We'll simply have to wait and see.

i disagree with dial that sales are gonna keep going up and up for PS4. I also disagree with Ryng that Wii will have an equal life with PS4. Wii had a strong 5 years but died off very quickly because Nintendo stopped supporting it after that, PS1/2/3 were not like that. Sony mostly just depends on 3rd party support.

Wii was such a beast.

In its second full year on the market the Wii sold 24 million, then 21 million the next. Assuming PS4 sales this year are slightly above last year and next year again sees a small increase, the Wii should be ahead by 20 to 25 million by that time. PS4 is not catching up any time soon.

After that, the Wii sales go to 17 million or so. This is when the PS4 can maybe stop losing ground, or possibly (but unlikely) gain ground. The next year, the Wii sold about 11 million. The PS4 would be in its 5th full year. If sales stay stable, then it can gain about 5 million that year. The Wii sold about 7 million after that point.

So, for the PS4 to catch up, it would have to sell about 30 million from year six and on. PS3 sold about 9 million in its sixth year, 4 millionth in its seventh, and will probably sell around 2.5 million this year. Figuring it sells about 5 million more over the rest of its lifespan, that would be about 18 million. So the PS4 would have to be about twice as successful in years 6+ to outsell the Wii. Doesn't seem likely to me.

good breakdown, i'm not sure about the 20-25 million part though. It seems like it's gonna be pretty close to me.

i'd like to see it but we don't have weekly numbers. All you can do is compare shipments.

That's the only Type-o I see.
When will the Wii sales start to decline in relation?

what?

There was a type-o in which the sales numbers were reversed. The PS4 was listed as 27 million when in fact those were the wii numbers. After that I asked when in it's lifetime the Wii figures began to level out. I guess I ruffled some feathers by asking an honest question and pointing out a typo. Whoops.
