PewDiePie Critical Over Nintendo's YouTube Revenue Share Plan - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 30 January 2015 / 8,135 Views

Nintendo has released a new revenue share plan with YouTubers where the content creator gets between 60 and 70 percent of revenue from ads. However, PewDiePie and other YouTubers have not approved of the plan.

"First off all, they have every right to do this and any other developer / publisher have as well," Said PewDiePie on his Tumblr. "There’d be no 'let’s play' without the game to play. And we (YouTubers) are humble to this fact."

"But what they are missing out on completely is the free exposure and publicity that they get from YouTube / YouTubers. What better way to sell / market a game, than from watching someone else (that you like) playing it and enjoying themselves?"

"This is why a tiny one man indie game like Minecraft could grow into a 2.5 billion dollar deal. That’s 2.5 billion… Made possible, largely because of the exposure it got from YouTube!"

"If I played a Nintendo game on my channel. Most likely most of the views / ad revenue would come from the fact that my viewers are subscribed to me. Not necessarily because they want to watch a Nintendo game in particular."

"Yes, there are exceptions of YouTube channels that uploads day 1 release of a game, 50 parts just to milk views off YouTube. That’s more of a problem for YouTube than Nintendo."

"I also think this is a slap in the face to the YouTube channels that does focus on Nintendo game exclusively. The people who have helped and showed passion for Nintendo’s community are the ones left in the dirt the most."

"And finally, when there’s just so many games out there to play. Nintendo games just went to the bottom of that list. Even if more publishers starts implementing this idea of sharing revenue. Then fine, there’s always going to be plenty of games out there, ready to become the next “Mienkraft” - Sounds cheesy, but it’s true."

Not sure i think this really justifies an article, but what he says seems reasonable. He both acknowledges that Nintendo are perfectly in the right for doing this, but explains why he thinks it's a bad decision, and to an extent i agree with him.

It applies to him very much and he is a super popular youtube user.

the highest subscribed youtuber there is as far as I know with what is accepted to be more public interest in what he says than any politician in the States.... sure why make an article about what he says.

now if they said 10% off the top I could understand it's not like nintendo made the product strictly for you tube use ,also if I'm correct most people are paid per 1000 views and most don't receive direct add revenue , so if Nintendo want's a share of add revenue they should take it up with you tube themselves plus these channels could argue it's not just about content otherwise everybody would be on the official channels.

I don't like his channel or videos, but he's 100% right actually.

SamLeheny (on 30 January 2015)

That might sound like a good deal until you remember that Google already takes half of the revenue, and if you're signed up with a network, I think they take around 20 or 30%. And now Nintendo wants to reach into their pockets too? Fuck that. People who make big money like Pewdiepie are anomalies amongst youtube celebs. Most of them work pretty fucking hard to make what they do.
Nintendo I... I love you Nintendo. But if somebody asked me what phrases come to mind when they say "Nintendo", lately I would have to answer "Out of touch" and "On borrowed time."
A lot of borrowed time, but borrowed all the same.

Nuvendil (on 30 January 2015)

The system is kinda halfbaked. It's only worth considering for fan works that fall into great areas like fan trailers, stream video uploads, and very basic let's plays. This doesn't fix Nintendo's problem with flagging journalism, parodies, and reviews which are all fair use and they have no right to be flagging in the first place.

I don't know who these people are. But let's play videos should not be for profit. They should create their own content, not leach off of other licenses.

"I'm mad because I can't make money off of someone else's product."
I agree that Nintendo should be like other companies in this regard, but it still sounds extremely entitled and whiny.

  • -1
crissindahouse Skullwaker (on 30 January 2015)

why should he be mad? Pretty much all his let's plays are Indie game let's plays if I'm not wrong and these indie devs are super happy if he increases the sales of their games enormous just because he plays them.

  • 0
Redgrave (on 30 January 2015)

I think he's only played two Nintendo games on his channel, OOT and Smash 64, and they were both ROMs played through the Project64 emulator. It's not like he actually paid for them and yet here he is trying to make money. The sooner these self-important Youtubers fade into Fred-esque obscurity, the better.

because he has around 400m views per month and because he has already proven that he can sell games just with his videos and he is probably the reason for millions over millions of game sales. If he plays a game, these games climb dramatically in as example the Steam charts or just look at what happened with Skate just because of him.

Ezquimacore (on 30 January 2015)

he don't even play Nintendo games

Pewdiepie should stop being so greedy and ungrateful. He's made 20 million off of video game developers. He wouldn't have a job if it weren't for Nintendo and other developers.

Play Nintendo games on your channel 1st then you can say something about it!
This guy featured 2 games from Nintendo (Fatal Frame & Smash Bros.) on his channel & there he is crying for his €€, another hater in disguise is what he is

  • -8
Zkuq Game_God (on 30 January 2015)

If he played more Nintendo games, people would cry he's just greedy. He doesn't play Nintendo games, and people cry he has no right to complain.

People don't make much sense.
