Reggie Fils-Aime: Wii U is Better Value than PlayStation 4 and Xbox One - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 18 November 2014 / 4,686 Views

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has stated the Wii U is a better value than the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in an interview with The Wall Street Journal and reported by GameSpot. The reason he explains is the cheaper price point and the library of games.

"We convince them with the games," said Fils-Aime. "So as an example, you can only play Mario Kart 8--this fabulous game that has sold millions of copies across the world--only on the Wii U because of the enhanced capabilities, the HD graphics, the new elements that we bring to bear for that particular game."

"The good news, for us, is that we're presenting the best value right now in new home consoles," added Fils-Aime. "$299, includes two games; it's a compelling proposition for consumers this holiday."

"For us the message is simple; you want to play these great games, you want to have these fantastic experiences, you have to upgrade to the Wii U," he added.

The Wii U retails for $299 and comes with 32GB of storage and two games, Super Mario 3D World and Nintendo Land. To compare, the cheapest Xbox One model sells for $350 and the PlayStation 4 retails for $400. There is also an Xbox One bundle for $350 that comes with  Assassin's Creed Unity and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

Actually, PS3 and X360 are better value than Wii U, it can't compete against PS4 and XOne

I didn't know the xbox 360/ ps3 could have 1080p 60 fps games, off screen play, free online and dual screen local multiplayer. Thanks for educating me. ps3 and xbox 360 must be able to do everything the wii U can.

@cfin2987 - Again, the PS3 did everything you mentioned.

As if Wii U could do anything that ps4 or X1 can....
And Wii U can't compare with ps3 and x360, they have a lot of better games

The Wii U is competing against the Xbox 360 and the PS3 I can get any of those for less than a WII U price, and those have a bigger library. When nintendo can make games with the same capabilities as the XBone and PS4, then it will be competing with those, but now is seems over priced.

The Wii U is superior (in terms of hardware) than those 2, and actually, the PS4 and Xbox One games aren't leaps and bounds better than the Wii U games. Hell, AC4 was barely better on the PS4 than the Wii U.

But, Nintendo always claims that they aren't competing against Sony or Microsoft. In a way, they don't. They do their own thing, and they measure success on their own terms. On the other hand, they are competing in the same video game industry as the other two.

Also, if you really think a Wii U is the same as a PS3 or 360, then I know you don't have a Wii U. They are definitely different.

yes, the wii u is competing with the 360/ps3 but its also competing with the xbone and ps4. all five consoles are competing with each other. it has nothing to do with "capabilities" (whatever you mean by that). every console is capable of different things that other consoles arent capable of. you really arent making any points here.

as for the original post, i would agree with reggie. the wii u is the cheapest, and has the highest quality games. maybe it wont be the best value next year, but it is most certainly the best value this year.

@mizzou_guy ... to my Knowledge there is NO PS3 game with Dual Screen Local Multiplayer... Where did you get that from?

Well, he obviously is going to defend its product. If they asked Kaz Hirai which console was the best, he would obviously say PS4.

But he's right, though. In terms of value, that's pretty fucking great. It's a $400 value at $300. They're exclusives too, and not from the same IP. The best XBO bundle is $50 more with two games that aren't exclusive, are from the same IP, and being on the XBO, aren't the best version of that game. As for PS4, it's still selling itself on promises. Which is all well and good, and it works fantastically, but in terms of value right now, both the other consoles have it beat.

He's supposed to say things like this. It's what he gets paid for.

I think the Wii U is a awesome value, because of the exclusives it has and not to mention backwards compatible with the original Wii. makes it up for lack of 3rd party support, get to play games like Super Mario Galaxy 1 &2 and many more awesome Wii games. I really like the Game pad too, useful when you want to watch something on TV.

How is an executive defending his product "news?" Don't all executives do that on a regular basis?

andrewclear (on 18 November 2014)

Of course he is going to market his product, and I love my Wii U. Right now, I think it is the better system (for me) because it has more games that I like than my PS4 does.

Honestly, the Wii U offers a variety of games, that actually takes advantage of all the colors a computer can actually render. I'm kind of getting burned out on the washed out look of the so called "mature" games. Wish they would just go a little more stylized with their graphics.

PS4 and Xbox One are almost eh same system, with almost the same games. That's pretty much the reason why I only own one of them, and a Wii U.

Please buy our console its the best value for your money, honest. Whatever reggie. If you were giving away free wii u consoles it still wouldn't be best value for my money.

"We convince them with the games," said Fils-Aime. "So as an example, you can only play another bloody Mario Kart game--this fabulous game that has sold millions of copies across the world to only Nintendo faithful who cant let go--only on the Wii U because of the enhanced capabilities, the last gen HD graphics, the new elements that we bring but really is just another mario karting game to bear for that particular game."

andrewclear bamf (on 18 November 2014)

Troll. It has better than last gen graphics, but I wouldn't expect you to know that.

Also, it has plenty of games, and while we can easily bash Nintendo for making the same franchises over and over again, name me 1 publisher that doesn't? Last I checked we have 5 GTA's, plus GTA3 had more than 1. We have a ton of AC, CoD games. 3 Uncharted games, Mass Effects, etc. All of these games with sequels in the works.

Every now and then we get a new franchise, like Shadows of Mordor, but then again, that is just a Lord of the Rings game. How many Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter, DC, MArvel games are there.

I like a lot of these games, and have both a PS4 and a Wii U. But the constant Wii U bashing, by the sheeple is getting quite annoying. Why don't you buy one, and find out that it is a good system, and if you really think the PS4 and Xbox One are actually providing a better gaming and graphic experience, then you sure the hell are mistaken.

The Wii U has some excellent games with excellent graphics, same with the PS4. AC4 was barely better looking on the PS4 than the Wii U. I haven't played Watch Dogs, but that will be the last game for awhile that will be comparable.

Tired of this hardware fetish people have. Give me some damn games. I don't buy a system because of what is on the inside, I buy a system for the games. Gamers only lose out in a console war. We keep trolling people over what hardware is inside a system, instead of trolling companies that keep releasing busted ass games.

Shouldn't we be picking sides on which developer is better, which one delivers better games, and better quality, than which console marker put the best hardware inside a machine? Hardware doesn't mean crap when a developer doesn't take advantage of it.

Look at this month, a month focused on Wii U, Xbox One, PS4, who will have the better holiday, who is better...blah blah. What I saw this month was a trend that is only going to become worse. Developers pushing buggy, busted games out the door, and charging us $60 dollars to do their damn work. Halo had issues, AC:Unity, CoD, Sonic Boom, GTA V, Far Cry, etc. So, while we argue over dumb shit, they are laughing at us all the way to the bank, and preparing to work on their next sequel, that will launch with more bugs, and they will make more money off of them, because people aren't holding them accountable for their lack of QA.

Stop the console wars. Focus on the games, and holding developers accountable for the product that they are selling.
