Zuckerberg: Oculus Rift Needs to Sell 50M to 100M Units - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 29 October 2014 / 6,222 Views

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has stated that he wants the Oculus Rift to Sell between 50 million and 100 million units over the next 10 years. The virtual reality company has sold more than 100,000 of its Oculus Rift's headset developer kits.

"It needs to reach a very large scale – 50 million to 100 million units – before it will really be a meaningful thing as a computing platform," Zuckerberg told analysts and reported by The Guardian.

“It’s hard to predict exactly but I don’t think it’s going to get to 50 million or 100 million units in the next few years," Zuckerberg added. "So that will take a few cycles of the device to get there,” he said during the earnings call."

"And then when you get to that scale, that’s when it starts to be interesting as a business in terms of developing out the ecosystem," he continued. "So when I’m talking about that as a 10 year thing, it’s building the first set of devices and building the audience and the ecosystem around that until it eventually becomes a business."

Facebook's acquisition of Oculus Rift was completed in July of this year.

I really don´t think that Oculus Rift will sell 50 to 100 million units.

It's going to be a slow crawl just to 10 million.

Well then you don't see much, including all the reviews of the dev kits.

might do 5M in the first few years, unless heavily marketed. The thing is you need a very powerful PC to play a game at 90FPS 1440p (their target goal). We're looking at a 1k$ PC with GTX970+
Unless you don't mind playing with PS1 level graphics.

This isn't a good idea.

That purchase was too damn risky, especially with other devices hitting the market.

They should have bought Minecraft instead.

Seems that few people here read his comments. It isn't going to sell 50 million this year or 50 million with its first retail version. He is hoping to hi 50 mill + over many version over 10 years.
With that said, I doubt it unless he does a deal to bring it to PC/XB1.

I think it will hit that before 10 years. VR is sold on experiencing it, and once it reaches more homes it will probably go viral and spread. If you have tried DK2 or know anyone who has, the testimonies alone are enough to support this.

If he sell one million, he can be happy.

And he can reply to himself:More han expected,a toast. But actually that's a lot of expectation for a gimmick,so is very improbable.

Yes, but most of them won't have the specs to run decent with it.

There are a lot of PC's, but not a lot of PC's with the specs adequate to run these.

Yes but not many pc users are interested in overhyped fads.

The Oculus Rift goes far beyond gaming. It has applications in science, medicine, education and so much more. I believe it will easily sell 100 million units, and far beyond.

that is an extremely ambitious goal especially with Sony developing their own VR head set and Google with their own DIY VR headset id be optimistically looking at 20 million in 10 years, to get 50 to 100 million the price would have to be around the same price as a 3DS but even then their is the other main problem "the PC gaming community", there are less people who game on PC's as their are that game on consoles so unless the OR is made compatible with the next gen consoles i doubt it will reach even their lowest goal!

Actually PC gaming is far, far bigger than console gaming, and it also makes twice as much money as consoles. Next time I would suggest doing some homework before commenting on stuff.
