It has been eight months since the launch of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The PlayStation 4 has claimed the top spot in the home console race, ahead of the Xbox One and Wii U. In June there was more than 500,000 PlayStation 4's sold, compared with 349,188 Wii U's and 299,560 Xbox One's.

For the video game industry as a whole console and handheld sales were up in June, when compared to June 2013. In total, there were 2.44 million pieces of hardware sold, which is up from 2.36 million a year. If it weren't for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, hardware sales would be much lower at 1.63 million units.

Despite the increase in hardware sales, software sales dropped slightly from 24.94 million units to 22.63 million units. The PlayStation 3 sold the most games with 5.33 million games, followed by the Xbox One with 4.02 million games sold. There were 2.46 million games sold for the PlayStation 4, 1.68 million for the Wii U, 1.46 million for the Wii, and 1.25 million for the Xbox One. When it comes to handheld software sales there were 2.45 million games sold for the 3DS, 1.12 million for the DS, 0.96 million for the Vita, and 0.37 million for the PSP.

Looking at the software charts, Mario Kart 8 was the bestselling game on a single platform with 891,806 units sold. the four console versions of Watch Dogs all made it into the top 10 with a combined 4.97 million units sold. The two retail versions of Minecraft also made the top 10 with a combined 630,679 units sold.

It's great to see the industry doing so well. It's pretty crazy that DS and Wii software is still selling. Same with PSP.
