While the PlayStation Vita continues to struggle in North America and Europe, the handheld continues to sell decently in Japan. In the week ending June 28th the handheld sold 26,595 units, due to the release of Freedom Wars. This is nearly double the previous week where 13,725 units were sold.

Freedom Wars sold 189,634 units in its first week on sale, according to VGChartz. The title is first party and developed by Sony Computer Entertainment Japan.

The game is an action RPG that takes place in the future where the Earth surface is no longer capable of life. Humans now live underground and are researching how to live on the surface. The gameplay features both online and offline multiplayer, both co-operative and competitive, for up to eight players.

Freedom Wars was released on June 26 and will be released in August 2014 in the rest of Asia. A release in North America and Europe is planned for later in 2014.

Not really, games like this only boost sales up for a week or two. Sales will be back to 50% of last years weekly sales soon, and those numbers already aren't that great. Vita and 3DS are entering the later phases of their lifespans (which is sad considering how long the DS & PSP were around for and how awesome the games they got were).

Solid sales for a first party game. But the Vita sales were low even if they doubled ... to low to late.

This was probably the last first party game for the Vita anyway. Sony has obviously already abondoned the system.

"Sony just released a game on Vita" > "Sony neglects Vita"

That common sense though.

This was the last big game that Sony had in development for the Vita. Sony already officially said the the future of the Vita are indies and third party games. They really dropped the platform.

Grim Fandango is Sony developed and it's a PS4/Vita multi-plat. Honestly I'm more excited about this game then anything else Vita has seen so far.

Good, I love the PSVita and it deserves more attention from gamers, it's an awesome console with a good list of games (if you're an open mind gamer).

Vita's sales won't be up YoY annually (this game makes it barely match last years). This means a new PS and Nintendo handheld are likely on their way! :-)

@OfficerRaichu15 So what? Its Japan handhelds always do better there than consoles. Why is it to that Vita Fanboy has use the Wii U to prop up the failing fortunes of Vita.

@OfficerRaichu Wii U have sold worldwide 133K, versus 42K of PSVita.
And yes, the game is coming only in Japan but even if out in Europe/USA Vita boots increase max of 5/10 K, because the bad sales in USA and the not retail Europe.
Wii U sell now +60K on wey week, Vita drop 40K only second week...
There is a difference...

um, Wii U on the week before WiiU was 8,924 and the following week was 19,098 which is a 119% increase vs this game being 13,725 to 26,595 which is less than double. Yeah it is higher over all in numbers but it also has a larger install base and at the same time, Mk8 almost sold double what this is anyway.

And Final Fantasy XIII have sold 1.5 million first week... What is special?

The Vita's low userbase obviously. Are you seriously comparing the two games?

drake_tolu drake_tolu (on 13 July 2014)

Userbase? PS3 have sold 4.3 million when FF XIII is coming, PSVita 3 million...
Wii U havee sold less of 2 million, and MK8 have sold double of Freedom Wars... (350K VS 190K)

You do know this is a new IP right? Those games you mention sell a lot only by their names. If FFXIII sold for what it is worth, it would have a sold a lot less..

Even Destiny is a new IP, like Watch Dogs... yeah, this game sell really bad.

The point is that this game is an Platform Exclusive, an New IP, On a platform with low user base and it sold good despite that. None games you said so far fit to this category.
