Top 10 in Sales - 3DS (2013 Update), Mario is King

Welcome to the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10.

This week we will be looking at the top 10 selling 3DS games updated to the week ending July 27, 2013. Last week we looked at the top 10 selling PlayStation 3 and the week before that the top 10 selling games in June 2013.

Top 10 Selling 3DS Games

Looking at the top 10 bestselling 3DS games, four were released in 2011, four in 2012, and two in 2013.

The four titles released in 2011 sold a combined 22.06 million units or 5.52 million units on average per title.  The four titles released in 2012 sold a combined 15.48 million units or 3.87 million units on average per title. The two titles released in 2013 sold a combined 3.61 million units or 1.81 million units on average per title. When it comes to the bestselling titles 2011 is the best year for the 3DS to date.

The top 10 bestselling 3DS games sold a combined 41.15 million units. The top two titles, Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7, topped eight million units sold each. Only one other title, New Super Mario Bros. 2, has sold more than five million units to date. However, it is almost guaranteed that Animal Crossing: New Leaf will top that milestone. Eight of the top 10 titles topped two million units sold, while the entire top 10 has sold more than one million units.

Looking at sales by publisher, just one title is a third party title, while nine are first party, published by Nintendo. The one third party title is Monster Hunter Tri and was published by Capcom. It has sold 2.22 million units to date.

Top 10 Selling 3DS Games

The top 10 bestselling 3DS games as a graph really shows how popular the Mario franchise is. It has been more than 30 years since the plumber first appeared in the arcade game Donkey Kong. Mario remains one of the most popular franchises in gaming. Four of the top 10 titles feature Mario in the title.

Here are the sales outside the top 10: The top 11 titles sold more than one million units and the top 35 titles sold more than 500,000 units. Also the top 89 titles have sold more than 200,000 units.

The 3DS has sold 5.22 million units worldwide in 2013 to date and 32.72 million units lifetime.  There have been 21.76 million games sold for the 3DS in 2013 and 87.79 million units lifetime.

Nintendo  has by far sold more games than any other publisher for the 3DS. Nintendo has sold 49.47 million games for the 3DS. This is 56.4 percent of all the games sold for the platform. Namco Bandai has sold 4.90 million games for the 3DS, Square Enix 4.67 million games, Capcom 4.62 million games, and Sega 3.01 million games.

If you look at game sales by genre the action is by far the most popular with 21.75 million games sold for the genre. There have also been 17.69 million platform games sold and 20.74 million RPG games sold.

Because Nintendo games sells very good it doesn't mean third party games sell bad on 3DS. In fact the 3DS has many successful third party games.
