Xbox One Games to be Region-Locked - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 28 May 2013 / 6,858 Views

Microsoft has told Digital Trends that the Xbox One will be region-locked. A game which is bought in one part of the world will not work in another. Region locking for the Xbox 360 was left up to the publishers, however the vast majority of games were not region-free.

"Similar to the movie and music industry, games must meet country-specific regulatory guidelines before they are cleared for sale," said a representative from Microsoft. "We will continue to work with our partners to follow these guidelines with Xbox One."

There is still no word from Sony if the PlayStation 4 will be region-locked or not. The PlayStation 3, DS and PSP are region-free, while 3DS and Wii software is not.

To everyone who don't see this as a problem: Good for YOU!

However, if you manage to actually think about other people who are not in your situation, you might actually change your damn selfish views on these kind of policies. This is an excluding policy, a sort of "#$%& you, I don't care if things do not work out for you", and not including.

I live in Japan. Yes, it is my own choice and I guess somebody would say that I should pay the consequences of my own decision. However, what year is this 1980? Should I have to buy several versions of the same console just so I can play my damn games?

For me, this was one of the biggest selling points of the PS3. I currently live in Japan, buy most of my games from the UK, even some from the US and also several from Japan. I buy Blu Rays from the US and I applaud SONY for taking such a consumer friendly position and embracing CHOICE.

Get out of your small basements, think about people who are not in your situation, and say no to these consumer unfriendly policies.

Just my 2 cents.

One could say that my view is selfish as well, because I expect the companies to cater to someone in my situation, however, I felt like this a long time before I moved to Japan as well. For instance, why should a Japanese who want to practice his French through playing games have to buy a PAL console. Why should an American who wants to do the same with his Japanese have to buy a Japanese console? It' stoneage policy and has no place in a global world in the year 2013.

Actually BluRay part of PS3 is region locked. So you need to be careful what you buy.

I live in japan too, and this is a huge thing for me as it describes a lot of the issues I have.

actually to be fair, a publisher CAN region lock a game on PS3 if they choose, but they dont. Only that PErsona fighting game is region locked.

Will there be anything positive in this new Microsoft console? Is that so far I have only seen negative points!

I think it won't matter if it's Region Locked or not. Only a small amount of people are going to get it. Most people in Japan, Australia, UK and many Countries in Europe won't support the console anyways.

"Similar to the movie and music industry, games must meet country-specific regulatory guidelines before they are cleared for sale," That's true. But it was no barrier to PS3 games being entirely (except for 1 or 2) region free. So, Bulls**t PR spin.

This is honestly a non issue. However, the Xbox ONE has so many negatives that can't be ignored. I wouldn't really add this to the list. The only positive thing about the Xbox ONE is the amount of servers, but I haven't seen proper comparisons to know if PS4 is keeping up. Xbox Live is no longer a positive because PS4 will have cross game party chat.

some may argue that cross game chat wasnt even a positive. IMHO i rather a system not be region locked than have cross game chat

Not a big deal, still all this region locking is pain, same deal with DVD and some Blu-Rays :(

I'm not going there anymore, still have 2 psx's and 2 ps2's... As long as the games are published on either side, no problem.

7 thumbs down for this? It wasn't a big deal to him personally, so he didn't lie, didn't bash the article either like I'm seeing all the time now.... This community has really gone to shit after the X1's reveal.

THe problem is he didnt say it was a big deal for HIM. It looked as if he said it wasnt a big deal period, which some would disagree with. But it was expected.

I don't care. I live in Europe, that's a very big region. I never ordered a game outside of Europe.

It is not like anyone who owns an xbox will be importing games from japan.
