Wii U Prices Slashed by Retailers, Hits Low of £200 in UK - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 22 March 2013 / 9,960 Views

The price of the Wii U is being slashed by UK retailers, according to MCVUK. HMV is selling the Wii U Premium bundle that includes NintendoLand and ZombiU for £199.99. This is £140 off the recommended retail price. GameStop is selling the same bundle at £244.97.

"We have taken the decision to reduce the price of the Basic Wii U to test the market and assess the impact of a price change for a short period of time," said ShopTo purchasing director James Rowson. "This has resulted in a smaller than desired increase in sales at this stage."

In the US, Best Buy has the Basic Bundle on sale for $249.99 today and Saturday. This is a $50 reduction in price.

Drop the price all you want people still want games to justify buying a console.

A price cut won't do anything, it's not selling because Nintedo released the console with no stand out games.

Has this ever happened to a console just released?

PS3 is your answer. Not sure where you are from though.

They're confused about why the WiiU is failing. It's not the price, it's the fact that people want a game console, not a tablet/console hybrid. They went from being simple and fresh and easy to the most complex console they could have made overnight. I'm still confused why they did that.

They want games.... I think that's the bigger issue.

Went into my HMV today and apparently the 7 Wii U's they had went within 2 hours of the deal going live. So clearly there's a market.

But it's games which are needed in the long-term.

Of course this move was going 2 have a positive effect, this price cut was MASSIVE, and it is for a bundle that includes 2 games already (and that it wasn't over-priced in the 1st. place), and still they admit it didn't go aswell as they were hoping.

Soon Wii U will be cheaper than Vita

inb4 in E3 Nintendo announces price cut.
Also, Iwata has to leave the company before he ends up killing it. Just about 5 mins ago I was looking at the charts, and the U sold less Worldwide than the Vita in japan ALONE. When THE VITA sales more in a single smaller region than your brand new console world wide, you know there's something you are doing wrong. I still find it weird/interesting how the U sales perform as if it was a 7th gen system.

Do you mean for the week showing on the front page or all year sales?

In all honesty, there should have been 1 SKU for $299 that came in either black or white. Both units had 16gb flash storage and nintendo land.

Weird...people are so cheap. they refused to buy 3DS consoles until the price dropped, people weren't buying the WiiU until the price dropped, and the Vita isn't selling good anywhere but Japan, where, lo and behold, the price was dropped.

Of course, games matter. the 3DS had no games before the price drop, the WiiU doesn't have any games yet, and despite my own personal opinion on the matter, the public perception of the vita is that it has no games.

Price and games, both absolutely necessary when selling a console. Who knew?

The reduced price is still too high.

Sorry this article is not very clear. Is it saying the Wii U in Europe at 200 pounds with Nintendo Land, ZombiU, and Pro Controller included Bundle with all the new games that just released like Lego City Undercover, Need for Speed Most Wanted, Monster Hunter 3, and Walking Dead Survival Instinct is still not picking up in sales?

Also, why does Nintendo insist on having that Basic bundle in the market at all? There can be two bundles (White & Black) that otherwise include the same other stuff. That is simpler for consumers. If they must confuse people, they can have multiple of the Black or White with different games included while otherwise same price and other included stuff.

More games are launching this period. Plus, there is a price cut. I am sure WiiU sales will increase. Let the WiiU have some time on the market. When big hits come, the consoles will fly from the shelves.

The biggest problem facing the Wii U, besides the industry-standard 1st year drought (which happens to every console, so get over it), is that Nintendo is really failing at properly advertising and promoting the thing. They promoted the hell out of the Wii, and then just seemed to expect the Wii U to do well without. They need to be plugging the system every chance they get, on every possible channel on TV.

No one wants the Basic Wii U, the system is too expensive, no one wants to be forced to pay for Nintendo Land in a deluxe bundle (which is wasting $50 for consumers in order to get to the games they really want), and NSMBU takes $410's to get to. These are Nintendo's problems, and this is how they can address them:

Turn the Basic White Wii U into a deluxe Wii U set, then bundle all deluxe sets with NSMBU (BY FAR has the best attachrate to the system. This game will sell the console bundled) in place of Nintendo Land (good game, but not a system seller at all. Get rid of it in the bundle, Nintendo), and cut the price by $50 down to $299 for all Deluxe bundles of white or black color choices. Do this around Christmas time alongside strong releases such as Wind Waker HD and whatever else we're getting on the Wii U soon.

Maybe partner with activision to have a COD BO2 bundle with a Wii U Pro controller for $319.99, at least for a limited time.

Nintendo needs to get games out. All the price cuts in the world wont help it without software. Nintendo is screwing up by not releasing more games for this thing. The VC should already be live, we should have release dates for more than just Wind Waker, and we should have cheaper games in the eshop. You dont waste a year headstart like this. Eventually people will lose interest completely, regardless of the games you put out for it. Look at the gamecube

LOL! If u take a look @ da vast mayority of games available on wii u, u'll see that instead of wasting a 1 year headstart, they r AT LEAST 5 YEARS LATE! That's a big part of their problem right there.
