Overview
Hardware sales decreased 38 percent this week to 2.5 million units, from 4.0 million units last week. Every platform is down this week, which is to be expected since it only two days were before Christmas. Year-on-year sales are up seven percent, but only due to the way Christmas fell the prior year. This year two days were before Christmas, while last year none were.
One game debuted in the top 30 this week. Fantasy Life (3DS) debuted at number 25 with sales of 125,948 units. The game launched in Japan.
Software milestones this week in the top 30: Call of Duty: Black Ops II (X360) passed the 11 million mark; Call of Duty: Black Ops II (PS3) passed the nine million mark; New Super Mario Bros. 2 (3DS) passed the five million mark; Assassin’s Creed III (X360) passed the four million mark; Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS) passed the two million mark; and Super Mario 3D Land (3DS) passed the eight million mark.
Worldwide Hardware

Hardware home console sales week on week are down across the board. PlayStation 3 sales are down 169,945 (-22%) to 599,500 units sold. Xbox 360 sales are down 384,863 (-48%) to 421,815 units sold. The Wii U sold 238,530 units, a decrease of 155,402 (-39%). The Wii sold 202,795 units, a decrease of 128,075 (-39%).
Handheld sales are down across the board week on week. The 3DS sold 665,304 units, which is down 435,075 (-40%) week on week. The PlayStation Vita is down 57,922 (-9%) to 144,498 units sold. The DS is down 120,145 (-46%) to 143,498 units sold. The PSP sold 84,803 units which is down 49,491 (-37%) compared to last week. Total week on week sales are down 1.50 million units (-38%) to 2.50 million units.
The PlayStation 3, 3DS and PlayStation Vita are up Year-on-Year. The PlayStation 3 is up 32,037 (6%), the Wii is down 167,006 (-45%), and the Xbox 360 is down 8,714 (-2%). The PSP is down 116,124 (-58%), the DS is down 19,471 (-12%), the Vita is up 92,715 (180%) and the 3DS is up 121,489 (22%). Year on year sales are up 173,456 units (7%).

The PlayStation 3 has retaken the top spot for bestselling home console for the first time since the week ending December 1 and for the fourth time in 10 weeks. The Xbox 360 led for the other six weeks. The Xbox 360 has a 49 percent market share for the seventh generation; the PlayStation 3 has a 34 percent market share; and the Wii has a 17 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago all three home consoles (minus the Wii U) are up.

3DS hardware remains well above its rival, the PlayStation Vita, and every other handheld. The 3DS outsold the Vita by nearly 5 to 1. The 3DS has outsold its predecessor, the DS, by nearly 5 to 1. The PlayStation Vita has nearly outsold its predecessor, the PSP, by less than 2 to 1. The DS has a 63 percent market share this week for the seventh generation handhelds and the PSP has a 37 percent. The 3DS has an 82 percent market share for the eighth generation of handhelds, while the Vita has an 18 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago all four handhelds are up.
Worldwide Software
One game debuted in the top 30 this week. Fantasy Life (3DS) debuted at number 25 with sales of 125,948 units. The game launched in Japan.
Here are the other games in the top 10 that are not debuts: Call of Duty: Black Ops II (X360) is at the top with sales of 447,173 units. Call of Duty: Black Ops II (PS3) is at number two with sales of 433,305 units. Halo 4 (X360) is at number three with sales of 357,019. Just Dance 4 (Wii) is at number four with sales of 349,317. Far Cry 3 (X360) is at number five with sales of 282,236.
New Super Mario Bros. 2 (3DS) is at number six with sales of 253,838. FIFA Soccer 13 (PS3) is at number seven with sales of 243,423. Assassin’s Creed III (PS3) is at number eight with sales of 242,777. Kinect Adventures! (X360) is at number nine with sales of 216,358. Far Cry 3 (PS3) rounds out the top 10 with sales of 215,534.

Software home console sales week on week are down across the board. The Xbox 360 sold the most games this week with sales of 5.71 million, a decrease of 4.01 million units (-31%). The PlayStation 3 sold 5.01 million games this week, a decrease of 2.80 million units (-36%). Wii software sales are down 3.21 million units (-51%) to 3.08 million games sold. The Wii U sold 495,695 games, a decrease of 326,016 (-40%).
Handheld software sales week on week are down across the board. The 3DS sold 1.88 million games, which is down 1.51 million units (-45%). The DS sold 1.63 million games, a decrease of 1.47 million units (-47%) week on week. PSP game sales are down 408,497 units (-46%) to 477,769 games sold. The Vita sold 397,476 games, a decrease of 311,401 (-44%). Total combined software is down 14.05 million units (-43%) week on week to 18.67 million.
Year on year software totals is up for the 3DS and PlayStation Vita and down for everything else. The PlayStation 3 is down 629,511 units (-11%), the Wii is down 2.08 million units (-40%) and the Xbox 360 is down 587,860 units (-9%). The DS is down 715,429 units (-31%), the PSP is down 439,802 units (-48%), the 3DS is up 193,595 units (11%), and the Vita is up 343,308 units. Total combined software is down a massive 3.43 million units (-15%) games sold year on year.

Software sales after increasing for three straight weeks for the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii have dropped this week as the holiday period ends. The Xbox 360 has led for the eighth straight week and for the ninth time in 10 weeks. The PlayStation 3 led for the other week. The Xbox 360 has a 42 percent market share, the PlayStation 3 with 36 percent, and the Wii with 22 percent. Compared to ten weeks ago all three home consoles (minus the Wii U) are up.

The 3DS sold the most software for a handheld for the second week in a row. It has also led for five of the last 10 weeks. The DS led for the other five weeks. The DS has a 77 percent market share for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 23 percent market share. The 3DS has an 83 percent market share for the next generation handhelds, while the Vita has a 17 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the all four handhelds are up.
