Sony Sells 43 VR Patents to Meta - News
by William D'Angelo , posted on 08 October 2026 / 2,204 ViewsSony has sold 43 of its VR patents to Meta, according to U.S. Patent and Trademark Office records and spotted by ZDNet. Meta owns Quest VR headsets, alongside social media sites Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.
The agreement was signed in December 2025 with the total number of patents set to increase to over 400 worldwide. 180 of those will be in the US, while the remaining 239 will be filed in Europe, Japan, China, Korea, and in other regions.
PlayStation VR2 launched in February 2023. Sony would only release two first-party titles for the VR headset, Horizon: Call of the Mountain and Firewall Ultra.
The VR headset from Sony never took off as much as the company had hoped with the price being cut by over 30 percent in 2024. PlayStation VR2 is still in stock on PlayStation Direct.

Nintendo Labo got more 1st party support than PSVR2
LMAO ouch
VR is niche.
Across all generations, Meta has sold nearly 20 million total headsets...
It is niche, but not as small as gamers seem to assume
PSVR 1/2 was just expensive hardware with trash support
Those 20 million headsets are probably sold to way fewer than 10 million different people, and some of them are actually probably bought by organizations of different sorts rather than people. Anyway, my point is that many enthusiasts have probably bought more than one headset.
It is but it's also a profitable niche if you know what you're doing.
I recall very immersive experiences involving just playing in a very dark room. Didn't cost me $500 additional.
Well, I suppose that means that their may be no PSVR 3 or that the new VR expereince on Playstation could be powered by the next Quest. Well, I would like to thank the engineers for their contribution to VR development. Not as impressed with the business side which didn't ever give it the support it deserved.
Most of the patents are not psvr related. Sony was a pioneering player in XR years before consumer vr was even a thing. and lots of headset manufacturers use their panels.
I think Sony's catastrophic mistake was not to make PSVR2 compatible with PSVR1 games. I cannot fathom why, and the result is that I won't be buying either where I would have purchased one device that allows access to a library of games.
Best way to play VR is on the Quest, highly recommended.
They should have released vr half way in the console cycle, not early when the sales weren't there. Don't know what they were smoking selling something expensive and not having the numbers and games to show off for it.
Surprised they went Meta instead of Valve.
They went with whoever was willing to pay them more...
Meta sell far more headsets than Valve ever will
VR is not going to really take off until we get some tech that is inconceivable at this point. Then again, someone has to do the groundwork that eventually gets us there, and be willing to eat up costs believing that some day it will pay off.
Meta has created the ground work. They are the market leader and offer the best VR experience.
